THAT is NOT the same way they did it in 1914!

No wonder it takes so long!

Hell it's not even the same way it was done in WMATA land back in the 1970s and 80s in their stations bored out of the bed rock.

The only poured in place concrete between the station end walls was the track, platform and mezzanine slabs. The rest of the concrete was cast in an off site factory, shipped to the station site and assembled like Lego's in the hollowed out gallery.

They could have bored 4 tunnels with all that clearance! Another waste and the sheep say nothing!

When New York figures out 2 minute headways on SAS, then maybe it will deserve four tracks.

It wouldn't have killed them to at least allow provisions for 4 tracks.

Well, considering that every 20-30 years, another attempt is made which pushes the project a little farther than the previous attempt, I would say it's probably closer to 60 or 70 years. :-)

Four tracks are not needed. Stations are further apart than local stations, so there is no knead for an express. With better signals systems trains can run closer together increasing the fishency of those tracks.

First time around it was lines on a map, second time it was lines on a map and funding, third time it was lines on a map, funding, and some tunnels, fourth time we have lines on a map, funding, tunnels, and stations! Clearly we're making progress :)

Just keep buying the fantasy T Second Ave Local tee shirts at the Museum stores and there will be enough money, right?

Considering the current attempts at better signal systems, there hasn't been much increase in efficiency or speed. Assuming the line ever goes past the rivers, the ease of adding new tracks could really be useful.

wrong on all counts. The utility of express/local track systems CANNOT be done on 2 track lines in dense rapid transit systems. The TA refuses to run the short headways of 60 years ago; what makes you think they will grow a new spine?
