The original WMTA subway stations are butt ugly.

I didn't take the video, it's an official WMATA video.

They're showing their age, that's for sure. Waffle architecture has nothing on the new stuff.

I'll take the old stuff over the new any day. All that coated sheet metal and painted steel is going to be a maintenance headache.

Leaks in the sheet metal station canopies is one of the reasons why the Silver line opening was delayed.

Chacun à son goût (which, as every student of Chicago high school French knows, means "everyone has the gout.") I sort of like the dignity of the original stations. The coffered barrel-vault ceilings were, I imagine, intended to evoke classical Roman architecture, complementing so many public buildings in Washington.

Much appreciated, especially since I have no prospect of riding the Silver Line in person in the near future. I almost, but not quite, feel that I'd be justified in adding it as a red line in my railroad atlas. Well, maybe pink.

As opposed to the brutalist approach of building stations out of sidewalks, which just looks dirty a year after being completed and has water streaks a year after that. :)
