Could you imagine a modern car doing this to a modern el structure?

I've seen those photos and I know the Jan 10th, 1958 demolition starting date (at 75th St). Anyone know when the demolition was finished?

Interesting to see that the city was actually paid for the demolition, the company making it's profits solely from the value of the scrap steel.

The last time the City was paid for an el demolition was for the 6th Ave el, in 1939. The City, thinking it would get the same deal for the 10.24 mile section of the Ninth Ave el, asked for bids. No one wanted it for scrap, so Albert Volk, a LaGuardia supporter, got the demolition job.

I also remember reading the city was paid for the razing of the 3rd Av el in Manhattan. I remember the article saying the city was surprised the contractor would pay the city instead of vice versa.

In that first photo I believe a fuel oil delivery truck hit that el column. Miraculously, an approaching train passed over that section without derailing or collapsing the structure, but the passsengers were badly frightened. The story was in the Long Island Press in the 1940's.

Very interesting. Thank You. I guess the city's "information center" is now the NYPD station?

I'd assumed, until now, that the exit/entrance there was always narrow, having been built in 1904. Guess I was wrong on that one!!

Do you know the exact location of pict 2 - the joint between the 1880' structure and the Dual contracts one? Gotta be on Liberty Ave east of Euclid and west of about 77th St..

Take a look at the cars. The incident happened sometime in 1956 not too long before service ceased on that portion of the el.

The structures met a some point between Eldert's Lane and Forbell St. Note that the old structure and the island platform above it end at the same spot.

This accident was on 1/23/53. The pillar was hit by a truck, and sometime later it gave way when a train passed over it (without derailing).
