Amtrak trains face growing delays from oil trains

Excerpt:

The growing volume of oil train traffic is apparently contributing to delays on Amtrak trains that share the tracks. And Congressional legislation that set standards to keep Amtrak trains on time was tossed out last year by a federal appeals court, and may have aggravated the problem an Amtrak official said.

Winter is almost over up here, but other delays persist:

Oil train traffic on the CSX mainline has gone through the roof, but the LSL has had a terrible on-time performance record as long as I can remember.

The one time I rode the "Late For Sure Limited" from CHI-NYP it made good time and actually arrived at NYP about 15 minutes early. OTOH the one time I picked someone up at NYP arriving on it it came in almost 3 hours late.

And you know increased rail traffic will produce increased derailments & increased grade crossing incidents, slow orders, enviornmental cleanups..etc.

So you want to go west by train & make it there by late summer?? Leave now!!

I tracked the on time performance of the LSL for the two weeks leading up to my LSL trip this past February and westbound it ranged between 2 and 8 hours late with an average of about 4. My train came in 5 hours late.

Trains do not run late. The timetable is an estimate on the earliest time a train could arrive, and indeed they cannot leave before the published time. But single track railroads are an iffy affair, and one slow work zone can add an hour to the travel time. Problem is these zones are always moving, indeed on a daily basis. So AMTK may add two maybe three hours padding at some crew point or at a place where they change from one railroad to another. So they might allow three hours for a segment that they can pass in just one hour on the assumption that they will be delayed somewhere.

Still, in my experience with the Empire Builder an arrival within six hours of the published is a victory.

The only time I rode the Texas Iggle (Philly/South Jersey pronunciation) it left CHI on time and went into the hole less than 30 minutes out to meet a northbound UP freight. That put it off schedule, so it went into the hole for two subsequent Amtrak northbounds. These were single-ended sidings, so we had to reverse out of the siding to return to the main.
On my return trip we were held at Tower 55 in Fort Worth for a UP freight train that didn't show up until 45 minutes later. Once we resumed our trip, we kept getting later and later until the 29 passengers who were transferring to the Capitol Limited in CHI were bused from Saint Louis to Toledo.

That downsizing happened in the 50s. In theory bidirectional /CTC on 2 tracks was supposed to give greater flexibility.

Yes, Perlman (RIP) could teach Ward a thing or 2. From a long term POV, the refusal of the C&O braintrust to consider letting NYC into the C&O/B&O merger was the major disaster in eastern railroading. Had they merged then and the smaller fish been sorted out betwen them and an N&W tail wagging the PRR dog we never needed to have the PC debacle. And just to underline the craven behavior in Cleveland, C&O, calling itself Chessie by then was offered E-L for a pittance during the lead up to ConRail. Again they declined failing to see that access to the New York Port with oversize clearances might be valuable. Not to mention that E-L's loco fleet was in good shape which is why I saw E-L SD 45s on the freight bypass above 3oth St in may 76.

Management geniuses should have been able to deal with the regulators and get what they needed.

After all, other heavily regulated businesses including electric and gas utilities and insurance companies manage to make money.
