That's why I said to borrow a crew. Two RR crews have to be cheaper than however many bus drivers they're paying now.

As for slots, for a few weeks Tracks 7 & 8 were out of commission due to the escalators being repaired/replaced, so obviously they have some headroom for maintenance. That headroom certainly could be used for an emergency additional 1TPH.

The first two could be handled by dipping into Amtrak's spare margins and maintenance headroom (since it is temporary). As for planning, you're right: for some ungodly reason it's far easier to coordinate things with a bus company than it is to coordinate things between two railroads.

Amtrak leaves a spare P32 DM in NYP, they could use that engine for this "shuttle train".

I mean how often is that spare P32 in NYP actually used? Besides there's a spare toaster left in NYP as well. So if that spare engine got used NYP wouldn't be completely lacking a protect engine.

Bus companies are definitely more flexible than railroads. You can deploy a bus without worrying about the effect on other buses. That's not true of trains.

If Spuyten Duyvil were out for weeks MNCR could probably hire Amtrak to run a shuttle to NYP. But when we're talking 1 weekday and 1 weekend, I can see that Amtrak isn't interested in upending all its scheduling for whatever relatively meager payment they might receive for 3 days of service.

Better yet, why not appropriate that space next to the northern end of the High Line (next to Jacob Javits) and stick a mini Metro North terminal there? It won't fit a 10-car train, but maybe it can fit a 7-car train with a diesel locomotive. And with the #7 about to be extended there, it's a relatively short hop to midtown. Best of all, very little tunnelling, if we keep it an open air terminal.

This would be a weekday or rush hour only service, since the terminal would probably be a bit too out of the way, except maybe for specials to Jacob Javits.. And if the commuters can deal with the diesel when they're on the platforms, I think the hipsters can handle a little diesel near the High Line!

Strangely enough, I had to look it up and can't see what it has to do with what happened at Marble Hill:

OR46: Trains using other than main or signaled tracks must move at a speed that will permit stopping within 1/2 the range the range of vision, short of a train, a car, an obstruction, a derail or an improperly lined switch, on-track equipment or a stop signal.

What the BLET brothers are complaining about though is unqualified being forced to work runs that they haven't qualified on, and the jabber up here is that it was probably some rookie who got ordered to move the train despite that. It's an allegation, there is no "proff" of this. Apparently management is pressing this because they're short of crews down there.

Regular Hudson Line service remains suspended until further notice due to Thursday’s freight train derailment in the vicinity of Spuyten Duyvil station. Limited hourly Hudson Line service will operate between Poughkeepsie and Yonkers stations through this weekend (Sat., July 20 & Sun., July 21). We expect to have regular Hudson Line service restored for the AM Peak on Monday, July 22, with possible delays. Until then, customers are strongly recommended to make alternate service plans. CSX is going to eat the cost no matter who does it - the Corman jack it up crews are pretty good at what they do though they're slow ... I can see MNRR wanting it cleaned up this month. Heh.

That's why I can't figure it out either. I can understand if they're pushing guys to run trains on some weedy track, but on Metro-North? Maybe one or both parties doesn't know or remember what the rule is, so management just mentions it as a catchall excuse. And of course all this is probably done verbally, so there's no evidence it's CSX' fault, and if the guys are rookies, they probably need the job too much to question it.

I'm wondering, if the crew knows they don't know enough about the track, would they try to dig up any information they can about the route on the Web, and store it on their smartphone(s) or something? It's of course sad if they have to resort to that, but I think they've reached that point already. :-(

Smartphone in the cab? LOL ... you're done right there. Funny thing though, the FRA expects you to answer it if they call you. Another fine mess of railroading. Like I said, I dunno what happened down there or why, only a bunch of grousing from the locals up here (who would NEVER volunteer a job down there) about just how bad things are at CSX. And it IS rookie reason, always has been.

So we wait for the investigation and find out what really happened. From the looks of it though, bad train handling unless there actually was a broken rail there.

Same thing applies for those of us qualified on the Hell Gate Line (Amtrak) between CP 216 (SHELL, New Rochelle) and NYP. Almost everyone is done the rules classes, and several engineers have done head end rides. Us conductors will be going thru the rides and doing the recertification runs within the coming weeks.

Not really. We do not know what caused that derailment, and to me it looks like it was a load shift that caused the derailment. We will see what the NTSB, FRA, and subsequent MNR official investigation finds.

I just don't know how ready they're going to be for their goal of normal service tomorrow.

Went "north" around noon and noted from a #1 train were hordes of orange vests on the roadbed toiling with a string of garbage cars behind them with heavy equipment in Marble Hill station.

After a r/t bus ride with 323 and 3075, coming back on the #1 train were fewer personnel on the tracks with 3 MN diesels in the station at Marble Hill with the garbage cars still in the same place.

My hunch is the best they can do is have limited westbound (GCT bound) service for the AM rush because nothing will be able to go back east.
