The R-32's are being assigned to the "J", Why?

Bear with me guys I may have missed a few chapters of this story. Why exactly are the R-32's being re-assigned to the "J"? Is this a seasonal move or a plan to get all the older equipment to the elephant's graveyard in the Eastern Division? Also what is happening to the four car sets of R-160A's that they are replacing? Are these unit now going to the "C"?

Thanks in advance for any info.

The air conditioning system on the R32's needs fresh air to function efficiently. Since the J line is mostly elevated, NYCT feels that would be the best line for them. This is a summer swap of equipment.

To clarify - it's not fresh air that they need. It's cooler air. Because of the contained heat in the tunnels, and the old & inefficient condensers on the R-32s, the A/C motors run up to 135 degrees F. Unfortunately, the R-32 A/C compressor motors have thermal overload switches that open at 130 degrees to protect the motor. The A/C then shuts down until the ambient air cools the motor to a point where the thermal overload switch will close and the unit will run again. Since the outside air is cooler than the tunnel air, the units will operate continuously when operated outside rather than in a tunnel.

This has been done in past summers for the same reason. On what lines were the R32 operated in the past summers? Believe it was the A in past because of the outdoor stretches to Rockaway and the longer express stretches without door openings. This is the first year the J is being used as their "summer home", correct?

They had to steal 20 R42's and an R46 from Queens to do that. Since the ENY R160's are getting as SMS this year, they can't steal R42's without cutting rush hour service.

Also being outside only east of Euclid is not very effective when you are in hot tunnels from Wash Hts.

Correct but there were 2 problems with the swap to the A line. The first was that it didn't solve the problem. Once a northbound "A" train hits Grant Ave., the train is then in a tunnel all the way to 207th St and back - over 2 hours. The A/C would likely shut down by then. The other was economic. For every R-46 train that went to the "C", they were replaced by 10 R-32s, in essence increasing car demand by 25%. This increased mileage and maintenance costs while reducing spare factors. The swap with the "J" line is one car for one car. No increases in miles or maintenance and no reductions in spares.

I am a railfan too but I don't understand being pissed off over the swap. From a railfan point of view, you get a RFW view of the J line which is not normally available any more. Besides which, I thought part of being a rail fan is to want to understand the whys and hows of railroading. This is why the swap was made and this is how we correct a problem without spending several million dollars.

I assume the reason some railfans are upset is because they didn't put them on the A line which to most railfans I would imagine is a more "exciting" ride than that of the J.

Mostly express, and they sometimes went to the Rockaways, etc. The J is local and only has a short express run during certain times of the day, and it already has trains with RFW's that are easy to find during rush hour.

It has to be re-interated time to time that the R110A and R110B will never run again. They were experimental cars--budgeted as such---and have been retired.

My moles tell me an unknown number of R110A's are in the process of being converted into pump cars. We currently have 3 pump trains and following Sandy that number is to be increased.

As I sad earlier, the cars are retired.

In order to bring them back to life thy would need thousands of dollars of work + manpower. Plus like R44's 388-399 they would need structural upgrades since they would now be railroad cars rather than subway cars.

It is not efficient or economical have a unique, odd fleet of 6 cars which would require a unique parts inventory both cosmetically and mechanically.

If a person has a jlo sized ass, then an R160 is perfect. The sloped back is ok, but they didn't need that much space at the bottom, imo.

I think the dished out seat causes your spine to drop. I'd much rather sit in a 45 year old PA1 seat.
