LIRR Assistant Conductor Exam |
|
Posted by DaNavigata on Sun Jun 9 18:53:45 2013 I'm being invited to take the Assistant Conductor Test for the Long Island Rail Road at the Hibernian Hall in Babylon on 6/20. Apparently I have to take a cognitive test, a vocabulary test and a math. Idk what to expect. Hopefully I get it. |

I ultimately failed the entrance exam last month, but good luck!If you pass all three rounds of testing on the 20th, you should have a preliminary interview that day where you sit down with an hr person and they work through your appplication and ask you some questions. If you do well, you get a packet. START STUDYING THE MOMENT YOU GET IT. |

I thought I was gonna fail, I omitted 15 questions due to time constraints. A good amount of people didnt pass it. Breezed through the volcabulary and math tests. They doing a background/credit check on me now and once it comes back, gotta study signals and definitions. This is gonna be a long and interesting process. |

The part that seems to trip up most newbies is the PC portion of the exam. You need to know the physical characteristics of all branches of the LIRR including length of sidings and capacity of platforms. You'll also have to be able to draw one branch from memory. Good Luck. |

Same thing as MNR's Assistant Conductor (in 2003 when I took the exam and 2004 when I hired on) and now Conductor entrance exam. It's easy (to me it was all insultingly easy!!)Best of luck to you, confident you will do well!! :-) |

You have to learn the LIRR and NORAC (Amtrak's rule book) because Penn Station uses NORAC. Try to get the LIRR manual of physical characteristics. Mine is undated but I know it's old because it shows PD tower and the Speonk switches are manually operated. My 2009 employee timetables shows they are remotely controlled from Babylon.Try to buy head-end cab ride videos. The railroad "comes to life" and makes the physical characteristics more understandable. |
