Sketchy details at this time; train to Hempstead (?) from Penn has derailed in or near one of the East River tubes. Minor injuries are being reported. Does not sound like a major incident.

That the discussion on SubChat is so thin, without details, puzzles me. We tend to criticize reporters and the media, but Newsday has provided much more info than I see here. Last night, for example, the Newsday website said that an NJT train was moved up to the east six cars, and that the rescued passengers (from those 6) were brought to Sunnyside and then back to Penn to face more delays. The same story today has been changed to say they were brought to Jamaica! I doubt that NJT equipment reached Jamaica, but if it did it might have had an ALP-45DP on the east end.
---
Although many NJT coaches have traps and steps, I presume management did not want to dump people onto the tracks of Sunnyside Yard.
---
Where were the LIRR protect engines? Sitting in Richmond Hill?
---
Again, did one or two trucks derail? One story says 500 feet of track was damaged, and 8 switches. Ouch! Big time damage. From the description of doorways askew between the 6th and 7th cars (thus blocking escape west out of the first 6), I suspect that could have happened even if only the lead truck on the 7th coach derailed.
---
SubChatters hate speculation before investigation. However, the occasional terrible ride I have had in seats over M-7 trucks makes me wonder whether a truck refused to pivot on a switch, causing the jump. I realize that almost all derailments result from track defects, but those M-7 trucks can sound and ride horrible sometimes.

The train was derailed, track was torn up. Just what would another engine do? (besides fill the tunnel with fumes?)

People in the east six cars had to be rescued. The protect engines have a coupler on the west end matching the M-7 coupler. Move riders to the first four cars, and uncouple them from the 5th and 6th cars. Pull east and you are out of the tunnel with locomotives that can handle LIRR signals. Maybe drop the passengers at Woodside. For years, the protect job sat at Harold during rush hours to unplug the tunnel by running in, coupling and hauling east.
---
If we have the story correct, one truck on the 6th car was derailed.
---
If the protect engines were not available, I'm glad they were able to get a NJT train shoved into the tunnel, so the passengers could walk through and be brought somewhere.

Sometime before 6 p.m. June 19, Newsday said that Amtrak reported that "a switch point protector guard cover" was at fault. It "appeared to have become dislodged."
Does anyone have a photo of this type of device? I doubt it is used on model layouts.
Thanks.

You're welcome!

If what Amtrak indicated was a fault with the protectors, when they fail, you end up with this:

Left unprotected, the exposed blade of a switch point can quickly become degraded from wheel battering. A damaged switch point may not close tightly enough against the running rail to ensure a smooth passage of the wheel into the curved closure rail. A wheel flange can force its way between an ill-fitting switch point and the running rail and then derail.
