Yes, when the TBMs were digging, they eliminated the grade where the station was going to be to allow for side platform construction in the future should funds materialize. If I'm not mistaken, the original plan called for a center platform like the new 7 terminal and all of SAS. |

I was wondering why there aren't any 'ties' long enough for third rail.Direct fixation fasteners. Rail is attached to the concrete track bed on their own grout pads, third rail chairs on their own as well. No need the disturb the third rail grout pads when the running rail grout pads need to be replaced and vice versa. All of WMATA's concrete track beds are built that way. Thing I found odd is there is no escape area under the edge of the station platform like there is under WMATA station platforms. John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |

I've looked at the map and the streetview and I've always thought that they are basically 2 blocks away from industrial land from the Ditmars stop. Once on the industrial stretch you have a clear path to LGA without going through any neighborhood. It seems like it should be an easy one.I don't think it is NIMBY so much as a lack of desire to build it. |

Also during the dual contract construction, it was realized that since certain new IRT lines would be connected to the original subway, the 7 Av Line from T/Sq south while built with slightly larger clearances than the original subway, it was not built to the same specs as upper Lex or the BMT. |

You are right about the location and it would seem that it wouldn't face that much opposition because of it. However, that was not the case and the community and politicians lined up against it. But you are also correct in that there is a lack of desire to build it now. |

MTA THREW IN THE TOWEL..funny part about that..they had a back up plan to build it from somewhere else..but said to hell with it. Astoria wanted a subway line along 21st St..from the 60th st tunnel..and the elevated line removed..since THAT would effectively triple the cost of the project..that was all she wrote. no subway extension will ever be built. |

All the MTA would have had to say is yes, we will give yo what you want but it will cause the existing fare structure to be increased and a surtax will have to be imposed to finance the construction, but if that's what YOU want then of course we will give it to you if you are willing to pay for it. |

And continue it east on Ditmars to LGA. Either connect it to 63rd St, 60th St or the "G" line. I think we can all agree to keep the 31st St portion of the Astoria line. |

The best path to LaGuardia is to build the subway down the center of the GCP and divert the live from Astoria Blvd along it. This would actually remove the el from Astoria's CBD (a la Jamaica) at Ditmars. It's not ideal from a ridership perspective, but better politically. Any attempted extension north from Ditmars would almost certainly disrupt the heart of Astoria for years. |
