Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Thu May 9 23:41:59 2013 Acting on some good info provided by our resident fellow Metro-North railroader/rail NUT (emphasis on NUT!!), The Flying (or Crying lol) Dutchman, I managed to make yet another outside the ordinary catch up at Stamford Yard, and for all of you guys, it is a tee little tease of what's to come for this weekends' Parade Of Trains/National Train Day celebrations!What is being being shown here has been loaned to MNR for the festivities from the Danbury Railway Museum. It is a very nice cast indeed, consisting of (in east to west end order) 1. Pullman Observation/Sleeper Lounge Car Tonawanda Valley, Built in 1928 for the great New York Central Railroad 2. U.S. Railway Car Post Office Baggage/Railway Post Office Car. Built in 1910 for Pennsylvania Railroad 3. Metro-North Alco-built RS-3M 605, retired eiesel engine built in 1952. 4. Metro-North ACMU #1171 (Air Conditioned Multiple Unit, also known simply as an 1100), retired electric multiple unit coaches built in 1962 by Pullman Standard for New York Central Railroad. 5. In especial recognition of the year 2013 upon us here, we bring you a Covered Wagon, NY Central "Lighting Stripe"-painted FL-9 diesel locomotive built in 1960 by General Motors. Now without further ado, let's get you good folks amped up and ready for "The Parade!!" :-) Brought to you on the scene at Stamford Yard, Track 30 earlier today (yes, folks, little ol' me hung out on MNR property while being on "Staycation" this week!!). Again, much thanks to Dutchrailnut for the tip-off!! :-) NYC Tonawanda Valley   PRR RPO Railway Post Office Coach   MNR retired RS-3M 605   Pullman Standard "1100" ACMU 1171 (NOTE: In one of its last days on the road, I had the honor of being Conductor on this girl, in consist, on Train 573, GCT to NWP Express!! She was a good ol' girl!! Hate the manual doors, but this ol' girl had some juice in her, she could still roll along!! :-))   And last, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST!! NYC-painted FL-9 2013 "Covered Wagon"   (Sorry about the catenary pole bisecting this shot!! But I made it work!! :-))  And I just know I am going to set off a firestorm with this one!! Yes, while not vintage, she will be a part of "The Parade" (whether you haters like it or not, BETTER LEARN TO LOVE IT!! I do!!)...... (Drumroll, please!!)(drums rolling) TAH-DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!! Da' M-8, here on Track 16!!! :-) :-) :-) (No, not this particular pair, but the M-8 will be on display!!)  Ok, now while they will not be a part of the festivities, since I do sympathize with those of you who actually like the older M-Series, in an act of mercy (and to quell any nutty firestorm that might have erupted from the posting of an M-8 pic), I provided these for you guys!! M-2 "Cosmopolitan" 8800  M-4 "Triplet" 8906  And while she appears to be getting some TLC in Stamford Shop (well, the east A Car, 9016, seems to be), here is M-6 9017, coupled up to the Stamford Shop Shuttlewagon  And last but certainly themselves not least, I got some diesels for you all too!! :-) "Brokeville" (Oops, my bad, I meant Brookville) BL20GH 113, after a nice fuel fill-er up, on Track 28 with a "Mini-Bomb"  And old school and new school go head up again (and tonight, these two girls might possibly be hauling the vintage equipment down to GCT from Stamford Yard, probably either leaving Stamford Yard now or in-bound and en-route already as I prepare this post!!), GP35R 102 vs. BL20GH 112 on the fuel pad   Old School/New School FACE-OFF!!  Now, now, now, folks!! While yes,I could have very well shown you all around the inside of the equipment, hey I had to leave something for the imagination!! Can't spoil all the fun!! (Otherwise, this wouldn't be a teaser, it'd be a cheater!!) So, I reckon I will be seeing you all down there on Saturday, or some of you will indeed venture out on Sunday as well. Well, they are the legacy who will live on after the older M's meet the torch. Besides, if you do a little survey of the good folks of the NH, I am quite sure many will simply say "time for 'em to go, nothing worth displaying". The M-8s are well liked by the regulars.I agree, they have been a part of the MNR scene and even pre-MNR from 1972, so I agree, I think at least a pair should be displayed, well spruced up inside and out just for the occasion. I would say get the very first M-2s, 8400/8401 (STILL in service!!). I said, personally, from the DRM, they should have rolled in the 4400 NH "Washboards". |

As of right now, the M-8 Bar Cars exist only on paper. There are still 12 designs being considered, but right now the future of the Bar Car is very uncertain, and if and or when an M-8 Bar Car will ever hit the rails is very uncertain. The Connecticut snobs will not give it up without a fight, while MNR is happy with the GCT Bar Car Commissary service in the terminal, and would want to see the Bar Cars go bye bye. |

First off, very nice pix, as usual Paul! Your camera can even make the M-8 look good.As for the future of the NH bar car, my gut is that they will happen. Simple reason, they make money. In my 38yr career as a RR employee, one hat I wore was in commissary accounting. They buy in so much volume that the wholesale price is so low allowing a tremendous markup. At last count, the railroad has about 30 bartenders on the payroll. With enough seniority, you get a good spot on the platform or bar car, you can make serious bucks (tips) At one time, a bartender was the best moneymaking job on the railroad. With the NH line loaded with wall street types, they will insist upon their bar car (keyword loaded!). As trivia, the best day of the RR commissary, was that black Tuesday back in 1988 when the stock market tanked. The amount of "units"sold on that day set a record that still stands to this day. Anyway, Im there in GCT on this Saturday & maybe will run into each other. I vaguely remember what you look like. Many years ago, you worked my train (843?) caught a glimpse of your name tag & sez to myself "self, that name sounds familiar" I made the connection when I came back here. I never forget a name tag! |

Was downtown at the employee preview of the Parade Of Trains, and I have to say the equipment display is, for lack of better, not-too-foamy terms, IMPRESSIVE!!!! Everyone will definitely enjoy what's there!!Of note, anyone looking to see the Danbury Railway Museum vintage equipment, it is still presently (as of 1805 hours per preparation of this post) at Stamford Yard, Track 10 "Hill", perfectly viewable from the New Haven Main Line, providing no equipment is blocking it on Tracks 6 or 8 "Hill", and is scheduled to depart Stamford Yard at or around 2100 this evening. So if you are out and about tonight, have your cameras ready. If the road is not a mess or no in-transit equipment issues occur with the move, I would expect it anytime between 2145 and 2245 from the Bronx thru 125th and GCT, again providing nothing slows the works up. As always, unscheduled (meaning not a part of the regular schedule of trains for a 24 hour period) trains timings are ALWAYS SUBJECT TO CHANGE!!! So have your cameras ready and Happy Hunting!! :-) Unless the locos hauling it have changed, expect BL20GH 112 west end, the 2013 (FL-9), 1171 (ACMU), 605 (RS-3M), PRR RPO Coach, NYC Tonawanda Valley, GP35R 102 to be in consist. Happy Hunting, folks!!!! Pleasr keep in mind, once again, some details of the consist plus timings ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE!!! |

Thank you, sir!! :-)All of the M-8s have the black banding around the center-car side windows. The first shot of M-8s with the 9211 due to the angle, the light shown down on the black band, making it look like, in the first M-8 pic, that the black band wasn't there. But look carefully you'll see it. They all have black bands around the windows, this I can definitely confirm and assure you. |
