I heard it was less then ten days before their 40th anniversary of being in service. The Greens' last run was September 1st, 1989 I think it was. |

I don't think this was an urban myth...I wrote about this in The NYCTA in the 1980s:It could be said that the great subway seat debate (bench vs. bucket seats on R-62s) began on December 19th, 1984, when Councilwoman Carol Greitzer started her unofficial "First All-American Tush Tally". With a tape measure, she measured the derrieres of 23 men and women around the City Hall area ranging in size from 13 to 23 inches. The newly delivered R-62s were criticized for their small 17-inch bucket seat, and the TA was criticized for trying to spend $50,000 to figure out how to correct the "mistake". Ms. Greitzer was trying to illustrate a point: that the TA failed to do any research on the subject before providing Kawasaki with the specifications for the bucket seats. As a matter of fact (IIRC), they were put on a barge with wrecked pre-GOH R44's and 1909 at 207th St Yard in 2001.I seem to remember seeing a pic of 1435 and 39 together at 207th St, but 1435's front end was completely gone, and the body was stipped to the bare metal on what would have been the inside of the car. The only car that I could never seem to verify its disposal would be 1440. Do you recall if 1440 was cut up on the spot at Union Square? 1437 was towed back to Concourse in two pieces. -Stef |

By that time, the Bway Exp was close to 100% SMEE and the Bway and Lenox lcls were operating Lo-Vs. The last train Lvg V/C for Bkln before V/C became all lcl the PM of Feb 5 1959 was a train of Lo-Vs. |
