I doubt that anybody cares as much as we do about what type of train we ride. As long as it's clean and fast, there is nothing to complain about.

Sweet!!! Though I know at least one 6 Line conductor who will want to avoid it!!! Most become too comfy and accustomed to the R-142As.

I remembered that when the R142As started running on the 6 in 2000. The train operators preferred R62As to R142As. Ten years later, the R62As will be back on the 6 and the operators start to get used to handling R62As. 10+ years are indeed a long time.

That's not good. 1741-45 is fine, but 2141-45 is one of the recent conversions from single cars to linked cars. And while all the cars have the circle/diamond LED's, only the original Corona linked cars have the special switches to operate the signs. On the newer linked sets, you have to operate the Air Comfort or Car Body Lights buttons, which (6) line crews will not know to do.

From 1948-1955 it had the most modern fleet in the IRT. From 1964 to 1984, it's cars were among st the newest in the fleet as well. It also got the only IRT cars purchased between 1922 and unification (WF Low-V's).

Yep. One could say that, until the 1980's, the Flushing line always got the newest cars in the IRT fleet, not the reverse. Even then, the Flushing line's R36's were the first fleet to undergo a major GOH. Their got the "redbirds" first.

Any car that doesn't robotically talk to you these days us good. Used to hate the R62 because those bucket seats seem designed for tiny Japanese butts.

I'm disappointed in management's decision to put the displaced R62As on the Pelham line.

Like others in this thread, I think they make more sense on the 4, numerically, operationally and maintenance-wise.

This seems like a repeat of the 1/9 skip-stop rollsign problems. Half of the front signs will be wrong during rush, displaying a 6 bullet instead of a 6 diamond if the custom of not changing front signs continues. If the road blows up, the side signs will be wrong too. They will wrongly display a diamond with Parkchester as the north terminal or a bullet with Pelham Bay Park as the north term. Hopefully Pelham Bay Park and Parkchester are close to each other on the rolls, but it will still be a lot of cranking 20 side signs per train multiple times a day.

The 4 on the other hand, only changes south terminals twice a day. Once when it is extended to New Lots after midnight and then again before rush when it is shortened to Utica. Even then, this doesn't affect every train set, because most of them are laid up in the yards at that time of the day. Many of them could be set for the 4's regular daytime route and left that way.

It just makes more sense to do a three-way swap, Pelham's cars to Corona, Corona's cars to Jerome, and Jerome's cars to Pelham.

Not to mention that when the original Steinways, 4025 - 4036 were assigned to the Flushing Line, they were the newest IRT cars and as the Flushing Line was extended, new Steinways were assigned to the line.

Another urban myth concerning the bucket seating on the R-62s. The reason that the buckets were so small was that with slightly larger door openings than older IRT cars, the seating area was slightly smaller so to provide the same number of seats as the older cars had, the MTA specified the smaller seats even though it was only on paper. For some reason the MTA insisted on retaining the bucket seat design instead of keeping the bench seating which it eventually returned to on the NTTs.

Not true. There were several R-1/9 put ins on the A for the rush hour to well into the early 70s. The A was'nt solid R-10
The Flushing line never got Lo V or Steinway rush hr put ins after 1950.

The design of the seats goes back but the size was based on the MTA's desire to make people think that the cars could seat the required number of people.

Obviously it doesn't. I don't understand their aversion to running a single light tubes down the middle of the ceiling. The vertical diffusers from the advertising panels do not emit much lumens, and the ceilings appear dark.

I hope that the operators who are so comfortable with the R-142As just remember to Flush on the R-62As so the float valve is activated before entering a station.

Shouldn't door opening width be dependent on ridership, not just stops? I would think the 4 has higher ridership than the 6.

Was told by a fellow subchatter that I was right with my first impression and that there should be a train of 6 complete R188's on the property; they should be numbered 7816-21.

Kawasaki is alternating between groupings, so the next batch will be a 5 car set numbered 7822-26.

No - the R-188s will be CBTC ready and thus assigned to the #7 line which, by coincidence, is the line being equipped with CBTC as we speak. The Lexington Line is many yeas off in the future.
