It's a concrete viaduct, like parts of the Babylon branch. This was the style of the 70's.

That came later. Probably has something to do with those severed power lines.

Right, I missed that. 134th St was the location of the alternate mezzanine of the Metropolitan Ave station.

That could be the design for a "new" 2 Av el like the one that has been discussed in some other posts.

They should have put in the third track instead of demolishing it.

There have been a lot of threads here about an express third track and lack of express stations on dual contracts extension of the Jamaica el. Exactly why it was not done is a mystery, open to lots of theories.

And ironically, out of all the dual contract els that got their express track, the Jamaica one needed it the most (outside of ther Flushing line, which is the only one that needs it more).

As I have heard, it was left out to both speed construction of the el and because of steel shortages necessitated by WWI. It was intended to be done after the war.

Although that may be true, it's odd that there were no provisions made for any express stations on either the Jamaica Line, the reconstructed portion or Liberty Av portions of the Fulton El. It probably would have made some sense to have fanned out the tracks and built express type island platforms at stations like Woodhaven Blvd and possibly Sutphin Blvd on the Jamaica Line and Rockaway Blvd on the Fulton El.

I do find that odd. Another theory is that the idea was abandoned after construction began due to the difficulty of retrofitting the Fulton St portion of the line for 3 track service. It's so narrow at some points that the typical structure would not work. A flyover would have been expensive. Another reason would be that capacity from Canarsie and Myrtle Ave would have limited the ability to exploit such an express service.

Maybe there were plans for an express track only if the line was extended further east, past 168th St, with a long express run between Jamaica and ENY.
