R-44s Back From The Dead??? |
|
Posted by ENY Blitz 5107 on Thu Aug 30 18:17:09 2012 Greetings all!!! I just recieved word today that some R-44s are being rehabbed at the 207th Street Shop, which includes painting and other assorted work.Does anyone in the know which cars are being done, and how many will be restored to service??? I have long said that the R-44s should have never been retired to begin with, and this is great news indeed.I am guessing it will be the 80 cars that have been held out of service "Revenue Inactive"..."Train Dude"-Do you have a clue here??? Thanks to all who reply! |

Who knows- maybe it could free up some 60 footers for use on the Eastern Division....can anyone say J through Montague??? |

It can't run into a stub terminal or change ends. There is nothing in the world that is compatible with it, except maybe haul it around by a diesel. At least an A-A unit would be operable, even if the Main Line B-unit version went extinct, except for the SI version. |

ANY car type can run in reverse, otherwise they can't uncouple from each other. If you are worrying about not having a cab, it can be flagged as they were when they still had couplers. Since railfans couldn't see anything through their tiny doors, I don't see them on fantrips either |

They're terrible, but the R68A braking has gotten much better. I don't know what they're doing to them but they've improved vastly. The biggest problem I have on the R68 is the seals around the windows. With winter coming... oy... |

I don't know what Coney Island has done to the braking on the R-68As but if they followed Pitkin's and Jamaica's model on the R-46s, they've gotten rid of the NYAB electric self lapper and converted the brake valve to work with the Wabco Electric Self Lapper. That modification is a proven success on the R-46s for both brake response and service reliability. As for the R-68s when I worked up there I used to meet with the Line Supt. almost every morning and I would try to get direct feedback from him, the TSSs and the crews. If I knew about a problem, I'd bring it to the monthly SMS meetings so engineering could look into it and perhaps include it in the next SMS. I think most shops would welcome the direct feedback. |

I could give you the laundry list of things I'd like to see done. If I knew the barn superintendent but if I'm the only one saying something... you see where I'm coming from. I've asked for weather stripping, and coat hooks for the winter on the R68. Keeping my fingers crossed. |

There is another person who posts here who was a T/O on the A train. He'd virtually call me every day with a complaint. Some were frivolous but others were looked into and some issues were found and addressed. Next time you are in the Bronx, go in and introduce yourself. He's not a bad guy to talk to. |
