I don't know what Coney Island has done to the braking on the R-68As but if they followed Pitkin's and Jamaica's model on the R-46s, they've gotten rid of the NYAB electric self lapper and converted the brake valve to work with the Wabco Electric Self Lapper. That modification is a proven success on the R-46s for both brake response and service reliability.

As for the R-68s when I worked up there I used to meet with the Line Supt. almost every morning and I would try to get direct feedback from him, the TSSs and the crews. If I knew about a problem, I'd bring it to the monthly SMS meetings so engineering could look into it and perhaps include it in the next SMS. I think most shops would welcome the direct feedback.
