M-N, NJT questoin

When I take M-N then NJT from Spring Valley to Hamilton next week, I'm taking a medium-size suitcase that's too large to fit in an overhead bin on the airplane (MD-80). I know neither M-N nor NJT offers checked baggage; is there a anywhere in the cars where I can place the suitcase? I'm sure it's too large to fit in the overhead rack.

Hmm...just did some googling on the question. The luggage rack may be large enough for the suitcase. Here's hoping that's the case!

If it doesn't fit on the overhead rack, you can sit with the suitcase in one of the seats in the "elderly/disabled/wheelchair/bicycle" area, where there is room to place it without blocking the aisle...however, if any of the aforementioned people/items get on, they have prioroty over you and you would have to move to another location somehow...

Honestly son, when I travel on NJT with a "suitcase" containing broadcast equipment (making the suitcase a tap heavy to lift over one's head and SAFELY place it on the overhead rack) I just slide the suitcase into the "legroom" space in front of my seat (so the top handle of the suitcase comes level with the seat cushion) and sit indian style with my boots over the top of the case... the C/R once commented on how innovative and wise it was to NOT risk putting a heavy case overhead and risk it falling loose or tumbling downwards with the train's swaying and jolting... My suitcase happened to fit perfectly (in an upright position) matching the width of the legroom space given.... and NO, don't ever place your property out of line of sight onboard trains.

This being on OFF-PEAK late-night trains... tough luck if you wanna try this during rush hour.... or if you happen to get the middle seat and the window passenger is exiting the train.

Assuming its not TOO large and its not rush hour, I would just stand next to it in the vestibule or use the wheelchair seats.

LIRR C3's have car-end luggage racks for this purpose.

Most likely, you will get a multi-level train on the Hamilton/NEC ride. There ain't no overhead luggage rack on the lower level, and the upper level one is too tiny to be of any use. Sit at the ends of the car. There are flip-up jump seats, which is where people with luggage hang out, also to avoid the stairs.

Even tho this one has wheels, I've -NEVER- used it as a rolling case, and always carry it briefcase style by handle... I even travel by Megabus!!

Oh, the wheelie ones are cool. And they pop off and go right back in every time! Remember, I'm a throwback to TK-760's, yo. :)

You can place it in a "flip-up" seat location, which typically is for wheelchair access, but when no wheelchari-bound passengers are around, we recommend that location for the storage of large tiems. Though one should always keep in mind in the event of a wheelchair passenger coming aboard, you will need to be ready to free up the location. If that being the case, or otherwise so choose, you can place the large items in the vestibule area opposite the side doors, but keep it in a way where it does not completely obstruct the exit/entry, typically on the sidewalls against the side of the vesitbule.

Not on a multilevel.

My advice: find a triple seat and put it in the middle.
