WOW...

I've been away for a while..for medical reasons...and missed ALL the good stuff happening!

So..my new cars are finally here!
And they look just like the 143's[no real surprise there....they did say they wanted them to be able to run together.]

Looks like you guys are to be going thru some more training I suppose,if you haven't already...

By the way..did they get anymore in as of yet?

In any case..I knew Alstom would be late...they had so much on their plate already....besides taking on such a large contract for the MTA.

Now with the CIP approved...and MORE cars coming...I wonder how Kawasaki and Alstom work this out between them?

I guess all the orders coming in the second batch will be 5 car sets,as the Eastern Division won't need any more outside of the 340 they'll be receiving. 552 cars should be more than enough for J/M/L and Z lines I guess.

Thanks people..for the update...and a special thanks to Trevor for the Photo.

Im not too sure about that...
even after GOH...they were still subject to more problems than they had when the were new....

The electrical problems...leaks...brakes...all just the tip of the iceburg...

Today..I must say..the 38's are far better cars than they were after GOH..ALMOST 10 YEARS LATER...regardless of the continuous leak problem.

It's all good,in any case.
I like the 38's..and wish they were going to hang around[like the 42's]..but we all know thats wishfull thinking...

It's been almost 20 years, since the R38 was the first car to go through the major GOH program which the R32, R40 and R42 did in late 1986/early 1987. GOH was meant to extend the useful life of a car for 20 more years, and the R38's are reaching that point right now.

Yes, the R46 and 68's will at least keep some semblance of normality for another 2 decades. Once they're gone, I move to Montana :(

I'll probably miss the slants the most. Their distinct look fascinated me as a kid, watching them run on the A line above Liberty Ave. An R42 on the J always excited me, since they were rare sights on the J before 1986.

And they have the coldest A/Cs in the entire system too!!

Stop the presses; that's bullshit! I've been riding the R38's for years now on the A/C lines, and I'd have to say the R32 outweighs the R38's in Cooling performance. Yes, they do have "good" cooling systems, but that's where it ends. To me, I'd say the R32 and the R42's have the top-of-the-line performance for car cooling systems. I suppose the new tech trains can come in afterwards.

And, one more note -- as much as I like the R44's, they have the worse A/C system in the entire fleet. For the last few summers, you can feel air, but it's not cool air .. it's rather garbage. Even last Monday, when temperature was 90+ degrees, and the humidity was unbearable, I boarded an R44 at Rockaway Blvd. (Manhattan-bound), and I was "hoping" to gain some relief from the A/C, but, unfortunately .. I was there hot as fuck for another couple of stops (I'd say, I was finally cooling down by the time we entered Broadway Junction).

Blah!

Still can't forget the first time I spotted a GOH R38 set (at Broadway Nassau in spring 1987). They were practically new cars, inside and out.

Coincidentally, the next day Jim Dwyer wrote of mechanical problems the new cars were having in his old "In The Subways" column in the Newsday.

I think the R142's(the bombs) have better cooling than ANY train in the A Div.The R62's on the Lenox,Broadway and the few left on the 4 line sometimes have hot cars or just blow out air,and im not even going to go on how those cabs can be like,i cant comment on the 7 line trains beacuse i have rarely worked over there. The R142A's (which i work with on Thur and Fridays) have crappy cooling. Sometimes if it gets too humid outside it feels just as sticky sometimes in the car.Even though the bombs have other issues cooling in my opinoin isnt one of them.Of coruse dont get in a car that the HVAC is jacked up then forget it.

For that to happen, the R46s would have to be modified to FRA standards since the tracks that the R44SIRs run on are (to my most recent knowledge) freight tracks, and not subway tracks per se. The costs inherent in that vis-a-vis the MTAs current financial position preclude that possibility pretty much.

The first GOH R38 I rode I hit my head on the low hanging standee pole above the end seats. That knocked some sense into my head! The mechanical problem you spoke about was a battery (drainage) problem which was temporarily rectified by cutting out 2 circuit breakers in effect making the cars semi-dark. That condition was repaired soon thereafter by the vendor.

Suck it up and stop being such a ... woman. :)

B Division has a LOT more toys, a lot more variety, and when you get sick of scraping the wall, there's plenty of OTHER walls to scrape that are different. :)

Hell yeah!

I gotta hit up the A and C lines, my R38 roster is seriously lacking. I only have 7 out of 200 cars covered. Hell, all my rosters are pretty shabby - I only have 20/600 R32s, and 16 out of 400 R40s. I also only have 83 out of 400 R42s. I gotta get crackin'...

Don't look for 3990/91 and 4000/01 because they are long gone. In addition, 4088/89 have been out of service for eons. They are on one of the barn tracks seemingly being worked on "forever". They do have the new south destination signs installed tho. On both cars, up to the time I last saw them 2 months ago, the #2 ends have shop trucks with regular trucks on the #1 end.

Has something dreadful happened to the R-62A's on the 1 in the past two weeks?

Only the fact that the cops are now searching their passengers' bags before embarking, and that's only dreadful to some folks.

Yeah..Bruno has some fly up his butt right now...wanting that mall built so bad at our expense.

This is a real problem for me..that three men should have so much control over what happens here in the CITY..while NEVER stepping foot on our subways, buses and commuter rails...

This is a real problem for me...due to the fact of HOW MUCH the plunder our coffers time after time..and how we have to damn near brake an arm to get something[even a little bit]back...

As I remember it ..it was Bruno who wrecked the Albany rail projects...it was Bruno who forced Amtrak into its new rail station that it didn't need...

Hummm..Maybe we should start thinking of someone to get ride of those Repukes before they run us even futher into the dirt.

G.E did a crappy job on the 38's that the TA had to fix over the years.

Don't know how they managed to get the contract in the first place.

M.K did a much better job with the the 32/42/44 and 46 cars.

Bruno HAS at least empaneled a commission to look into high speed rail along the Hudson line again and the head of that panel is a close friend of mine with a very long history of GOOD service to the people of the state. So credit where credit is due on *ONE* aspect of Bruno though nobody knows where it's going to end up in September or so when the commission reports back to the state senate.

But OTHERWISE ... yeah ... like you said. :(

Hey Kirk...hows it going...

Well..take a look along Route 55[Central avenue/State street].....

You'll see what was SUPPOSE to be a lightrail line being turned into a BRT line....

Whats wrong with this picture?

The new commuter line to Troy and beyond...
What happened to it?

Bruno did.

You remember my personal run in with him at Russell Sage, don't you...?

From that moment..my "opinion" of him hasn't changed on bit.

And he hasn't proven me wrong, either.

So..my new cars are finally here!

They are not yours.

And they look just like the 143's[no real surprise there....they did say they wanted them to be able to run together.]

They don't need to look the same to run together...
