The decision not to run service over the GWB was made long after the initial 2 track infrastructure was in place and the additional service was not needed at the time and probably still isn't. Don't forget when the IND was built the GWB only had one level and I have heard that the bridge was actually designed to have tracks on the upper level. The concept of subway service on the bridge was briefly resurrected when it was thought that it would run on the lower level. |

If you can remember the old GWB, before the lower level, the 2 center lanes were set apart from the rest of the lanes with rounded curbing. They were designed for trolley service, which sadly never came to pass. The lower level was designed for 2 railway tracks in each direction. |
