The third track project would also transform our suburbs into an urban environmentOne could argue that this is what's partially pumping up the real estate prices around here compared to other parts of the country. We're not willing to building denser housing to hold more residents and add to the supply because people are obsessed with keeping the character of their neighbourhoods intact, but also we're unwilling to build the transit infrastructure to bring in workers from areas with greater density limits. |

The problem with increasing density is people bought into a certain lifestyle and reasonably expected it to last. I don't think we should pull the rug out from under them so readily. |

Well...I hear that, son. What your really saying is that you dont want "CHANGE"..You like it just the way it is.You dont want "urban sprawl" to come close to you.. So to be honest..you ARE NIMBY'S..But you dont like hearing yourselves described in THAT manor.. I whole heartily agree with you..isolate yourself off at the expense of everyone else. The funding can be used elsewhere, where the neighborhoods can and will appreciate it. |

And NIMBYism even stronger than that opposing the third track. They really should have built the Babylon branch with 3 tracks. That would have keept all the South Shore diesels off the main line and allowed for increased reverse peak service with 2 tracks. |

If you put a third track on the Babylon branch you can take the diesels going east of Babylon off of the main line? Or cut reverse peak service on the Babylon branch and combine peak trains so you can move service east of Babylon to the Babylon branch rather than taking up space on the main line? |

How F'n stupid can the folks on Long Island really be??. If I was in charge of the LIRR for a week, the first thing I'd do, if I could get away with it, is to shut the railroad down, say for maintenance or to check the diesel exhaust for enviormential compliance, or some other bs excuse for the week and to let those self ritcheous white flight primadonnas worried about their real estate property values nosediving a/c a third track encroaching on their swimming pools drown in traffic & re-awaken as to how the LIRR is important to the overall quality of life and the economy on Long Island. Lets see one of those bloated whiners go into cardiac arrest & not make it to the hosp a/c too much traffic. Lets see how the family feels then. Bottom line, any excuse to ease traffic using increased railroad traffic is a good one.I remember when the last LIRR strike was back in the 70's & slowly but surely, Long Island was slowly dying. Strangling in its own traffic, trucking crippled & rail freight halted, Long Island was in serious trouble, to say the least. To stifle LIRR growth nowaydays is just shortsighted & stupid |

Yeah, but how much time do we REALLY have out here? The sea is rising. The water table is being polluted. Plumes of chemicals are all over the place. The air is getting worse and worse. I would go for a third track, perhaps it could be built on an elevated structure through NHP, Carle Place and Westbury. Thought should also be given to the Central Branch with an underground segment from Meadowbrook Parkway to Levittown.wayne |

It's hard to put a third track in through all those island platforms. And the main line west of Mineola has to deal with 3 lines, not one. Trains running express between Hicksville and Jamaica still have to use the eastbound track to get around all the local service. The Main Line should have been upgraded in the 60's, with the rest of the LIRR. |

They thought of elevating the ROW from New Hyde Park to Hicksville, eliminating X amount of grade crossings & the accidents that go with them but the whiners said NOOOO. "We dont want another Babylon branch type El screwing up our landscape" Then they they thought of burying the ROW below grade to accomplish the same result , kinda like what they did in Bayside years ago, again the whinners said no.They want it both ways out there, but in the real world, that wont happen. So here's whats gonna change, the 3d track might happen but any long term improvements as far as eliminating all those grade crossings, not in our lifetime. Maybe something will happen if some politicians kid gets killed at one of those grade crossings. Things always change when it hits home. As far as the sea rising, relax! You have a long time before you have to swim to work. BTW Y'all should be thankful they never built Shoreham! |

How feasible is closing Main St crossing, Mineola? Every time I go through there, even during the height of the rush hour, I never see a long line backed up.Urban Ave: Bond St bridge School St: nothing can be done here due to truck traffic Willis Ave: nothing can really be done here Main St: close New Hyde Pk Rd: Underpass South 12 St: pedestrian overpass Covert Ave: Overpass? One of the reasons that most of the community opposition you hear comes from New Hyde Park and Floral Park is that NHP/Merillon have a 50 min westbound gap (1 hour if you only count NYP trains) in the AM peak during which time the expresses from the far-out stations take priority over local service. As for how many trains are scheduled to use the line...there are 46 westbounds per morning rush hour combined west of Mineola. Add to that 10 eastbounds and several deadheads, and you got a mess. That's 14 average TPH through there, the actual TPH during the peak of the peak is higher. |
