Boston Fare Questions |
|
Posted by andy on Sun Aug 5 09:11:12 2012 What is the difference between a Charlie Card and a Charlie Ticket? Can both be purchased at subway station vending machines? Are credit cards accepted at the vending machines? |

The Charlie Card offers a discounted fare on everything (for example, 2.00 for the subway vs. 2.50 with the Charlie Ticket). Also, the Charlie Card offers transfers between the subway and the bus as well as two buses (local to express requires a step up fare though) while the Charlie Ticket only offers transfers between two local buses. Credit Cards are accepted at the machine and only the ticket can be purchased at the machine. You have to get a Charlie Card for free from an agent, online, or at one of the office locations (the ones I know of are at Downtown Crossing, Back Bay, North and South Stations, there are probably more). Also, as far as passes, I've found the Charlie Ticket is the only one that stores 1-day and 7-day passes as well as Commuter Rail passes. The Charlie Card can only store monthly passes. Try to get a Charlie Card, as they don't expire for about 4 years. If you're staying enough to use the 7-day pass though, get that too. Visit the MBTA's website for more info or if I've gotten anything wrong. |

Actually, after I got my first one during orientation at Tufts, I found empty ones stacked on top of the vending machines at Davis Square several times throughout the year. And I haven't heard that the agents charge for them although that may have changed, so as far as I know, they don't have a surcharge to start out with. |

I got my Charlie Card at the Airport station when I was in Bahston at the end of June. I like their setup: instead of dipping or swiping, you press your Charlie Ticket or Card against the reader. |

I've needed to do just one ride period in Boston when I was getting dropped off on the Orange Line and heading to Downtown Crossing to walk to South Station. I didn't need another piece of plastic, so the ticket sufficed. It's quick and easy and doesn't require a visit to the agent. |

The card's benefit are that they have a 30 cent discount for each fare, and bus-subway transfers... the ticket's benefit is that it is (IIRC) the only way to get a day / weekly pass. The day/weekly passes are also good for commuter rail within zone 1A. |
