The Charlie Card offers a discounted fare on everything (for example, 2.00 for the subway vs. 2.50 with the Charlie Ticket). Also, the Charlie Card offers transfers between the subway and the bus as well as two buses (local to express requires a step up fare though) while the Charlie Ticket only offers transfers between two local buses. Credit Cards are accepted at the machine and only the ticket can be purchased at the machine. You have to get a Charlie Card for free from an agent, online, or at one of the office locations (the ones I know of are at Downtown Crossing, Back Bay, North and South Stations, there are probably more).

Also, as far as passes, I've found the Charlie Ticket is the only one that stores 1-day and 7-day passes as well as Commuter Rail passes. The Charlie Card can only store monthly passes. Try to get a Charlie Card, as they don't expire for about 4 years. If you're staying enough to use the 7-day pass though, get that too. Visit the MBTA's website for more info or if I've gotten anything wrong.
