MTA defends Long Beach LIRR work at season peak

Long Beach officials have asked the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to restore an express train that is temporarily out of service because of excavation work.

The work, which is taking place on the Queens side of the East River tunnels, has canceled an outbound evening rush hour express train on the Long Island Rail Roads Long Beach branch.

Long Beach needs the express train to feed its seasonal economy, said city council president Len Torres in a statement issued Monday.

Service to Long Beach should never be cut in the summer, the Torres statement said. Why shouldnt we have as many express trains as other communities? Summer work should be done where summer ridership decreases, not where it increases.

MTA spokesman Salvatore Arena defended the work. Schedule changes are unavoidable during construction, he said.

Arena said the train would likely be restored next week.

The 5:20 express train. There was a 5:23 local train that in terms of actual commuting time adds maybe 5 minutes. The Hempstead Branch, for example, does not have any PM Peak trains that do not stop at Jamaica. Ditto the West Hempstead branch. Cry me a river

According to the schedule, the only train I see fitting the description is #6861, leaving at 4:57 PM on Sat and Sun, serving Long Beach, Jamaica and NYP only. It's neatly sandwiched between the 4:26 and 5:26 locals. It also has a morning counterpart, #6816, leaving NYP at 10:22. Oddly, this one bypasses Jamaica. NYP to Long Beach non-stop.

I can understand the anger of those living in East Rockaway or Island Park. Without the PM express, that 5:26 local is probably filled up out of Island Park.

A weekday Peak train was cut. Go to LIRR schedules for all stations and there is a link for modifications due to work at Harold

Maybe I'm missing something. Note 4 refers to the weekend train.

I see now. Train #820. I didn't know there was a seasonal peak express.

I hardly think beach goers ride THAT train.

What they should have done is sent the 5:06 Flatbush to West Hempstead to Long Beach instead, and protect with a West Hempstead start-up train from Jamaica.

It isn't a seasonal peak express. It runs all year round. I think his point was it should not have been cut in the summer because more people spend time out there now than in the other seasons...

What point is there to have a train which runs non-stop to Long Beach outside the summer? Give me a break, that's a slot that could better be served by another line.

Mr. Torres speaks out of both sides of his mouth.

Long Beach has a terrible problem with swimmers being caught in riptides after the lifeguards go off duty at 6 PM.

Yet this guy wants is criticizing the LIRR because they have cut out an express train that arrives into Long Beach after 6 PM.

If he's really concerned about the beachgoers, he should be thanking the LIRR...

All political posturing.

This is how in campaign and reports to their constituents they say they're "Not afraid to take on the MTA and I have done so".
