VIDEO: NS Heritage Locomotives at Spencer

I had a fun trip yesterday. When I arrived at the museum at 9:30 (after a 3.5 hour drive including a breakfast stop), the parking lots had filled up and the staff was telling people to park on the grass along the entrance road. I ended up near the entrance from the main road. A bit longer and I would have had to find a space on someone's lawn and pay for it.

I stayed from 9:30 to 5:30. The sun and heat were brutal. Fortunately the gift shop and some of the exhibit halls were air-conditioned so I could duck in for occasional breaks. The crowds thinned out noticeably during the afternoon, but you can see there were still some diehards at 5 PM when I shot this clip. They had just finished tucking all the units back into their spots around the turntable after their runs out to the south end of the museum grounds and back.

Beautiful stuff. I just wish that they had the "Lightning Stripe" on the outside instead of buried

Which is interesting indeed given that CSX got most of the NY Central.

well, they got the racetrack west of Cleveland and CSX got the old PRR which is mostly weeds now, but during the pre split planning, CR equipment destined for CSX was sublettered NYC, and for NS PRR. So when I listed CSX predecessor roads inn another post I included NYC and a commenter added PRR which I don't dispute though not much is in use IINM.

As long as writing about this, I will (perhaps repeat) say that the entire PC debacle could have been avoided if the C&O bean counters hadn't been so angry at NYC. By the time the merger discussions began Perlman was trying to save NYC by innovating but the C&O guys (in my view) were still smarting from Robert Young's time running C&O even though he was dead. Net result, C&O eats B&O, NYC is scared. The back and forth w/PRR is nuts as the two are stumbling toward insolvency.
Fast forward, USRA is trying to figure out balanced systems, offers EL to Chessie for $1 they say okay, then chicken out over labor issues. (Turns out NONE of the original over crewing deals survived for long.) So EL west of the PA line is weeds, and we saw CR basically slim down much as Jervis Langdon had wanted to do but years late and finally after two NS attempts at grabbing all of CR we are here.

Probably someone from NS went out to San Francisco and saw what was done with the PCCs, and said, "hey, that's a great idea!" And so it happened.....

Here's the turntable in action, as it puts "Monongahela" out onto the museum's "main line."

(I'm uploading the high-definition versions, which takes a long time via my "DSL Lite" connection.)

It's parade time! Here are #8114 (old Norfolk Southern), #8105 (Interstate), #8099 (Southern), and #8101 (Central of Georgia) on the museum's "main line."

I think it would have worked a bit better if they had flip-flopped the morning and afternoon events.

In the morning they showed off the engines at the roundhouse, giving each of them a full turn on the turntable, one after the other. The problem was that in the morning, the sun is behind the roundhouse, so we were looking into the sun. It would have been better in the afternoon with the sun behind the viewers, like in my videos #1 and #4.

Beginning a bit before noon they ran the engines in groups on the "main line": bring them out via the turntable, run them out and back. For the first group, the sun was coming from the side that had a nice little hill where you could get a good look without people blocking your view. Then the sun moved around to the other side of the track, which was a flat field so to get a good view you had to compete for a spot along the rope. Also, to get to that side you had to walk a lot further from the roundhouse with its shade, restrooms, vending machines and drinking fountains, because you had to go around a yard/storage area. This was the hottest part of the day, too. :-( If they had done this part in the morning, they probably could have done most of the viewing from the side with the hill. Better view and less walking.
