So when I listed CSX predecessor roads inn another post I included NYC and a commenter added PRR which I don't dispute though not much is in use IINM.As long as writing about this, I will (perhaps repeat) say that the entire PC debacle could have been avoided if the C&O bean counters hadn't been so angry at NYC. By the time the merger discussions began Perlman was trying to save NYC by innovating but the C&O guys (in my view) were still smarting from Robert Young's time running C&O even though he was dead. Net result, C&O eats B&O, NYC is scared. The back and forth w/PRR is nuts as the two are stumbling toward insolvency. Fast forward, USRA is trying to figure out balanced systems, offers EL to Chessie for $1 they say okay, then chicken out over labor issues. (Turns out NONE of the original over crewing deals survived for long.) So EL west of the PA line is weeds, and we saw CR basically slim down much as Jervis Langdon had wanted to do but years late and finally after two NS attempts at grabbing all of CR we are here. |
