IND Pitkin Avenue Extension - map

I don't believe I've seen this map on SubChat before but apologies if it was previously posted (also sorry for the quality of the image - my scanner has been giving me a hard time lately). It's from a c. 1939 Hagstrom map (all the els and the IND World's Fair spur date it to that year) and shows the stations on the proposed line to 106th Street. It's interesting that the optimistic "OPEN 1943" appears along the route.

I guess being the Fulton el was still running all of the way to Park row and not yet owned by the city there was no plan of re-claiming the dual contracts section from hudson to lefferts.

You know, it's quite possible that sections of this route were built, like the 2nd Avenue subway has been, but never completed. Look at that map i t's circa 1943, when WWII was going on, and perhaps the steel needed for the subway was instead used for the war effort. Figure out where those barns were at the time, and if they were between the track itself and where the subway was supposed to have been, possibly some subway construction did take place. If the proposed expansion of Aqueduct ever takes place, and a subway was started, one never knows if such subway construction will appear. If it does, it certainly would add to the 76th Street Station mystery, or help to solify its existence..

Or perhaps it was being used for the LIRR tunnel being built under Atlantic avenue at the time..
with steel shortage in full swing,a powers that be could've decided which project would receive TOP priority..with the other placed on the back burner until the war effort was over.

By the time the 1950s rolled around, they perhaps decided to place it on more block over. The tower boards at Euclid Avenue and Pitkin Yard refer to the station as 76 Street.

Crescent St. was never the line between Brooklyn and Queens. The actual line can be seen on the map, a bit east of there. Possibly it was seen as the last street wide enough to carry an el west of the county (then City) line, or otherwise "major" enough to reasonably do so. But why turn there if they were waiting for permission to enter Queens? To show Queens politicians that they were serious about building in a different direction if permission was not soon forthcoming? Or perhaps one line simply followed the other in order to maintain a fairly constant distance between the two?

The Broadway Line went up Fulton to gather a larger walking-distance clientele than if it had gone up Jamaica Ave., other considerations notwithstanding. It jogged over at Crescent for the entrance to the cemetery (in the days when cemetery were a Sunday destination) and to connect with cars to Jamaica.

I don't know why the Fulton Line jogs at the same street, but an educated guessis that it took advantage of the end of the Broadway Line to tap into part of its territory and probably make connections to a more developed (for the time) part of Queens and to make connections further east. Remember that Broadway and Fulton were built and run by competitive companies.
