The Broadway Line went up Fulton to gather a larger walking-distance clientele than if it had gone up Jamaica Ave., other considerations notwithstanding. It jogged over at Crescent for the entrance to the cemetery (in the days when cemetery were a Sunday destination) and to connect with cars to Jamaica.I don't know why the Fulton Line jogs at the same street, but an educated guessis that it took advantage of the end of the Broadway Line to tap into part of its territory and probably make connections to a more developed (for the time) part of Queens and to make connections further east. Remember that Broadway and Fulton were built and run by competitive companies. |
