Downtown (A) train rodent scratches a female straphanger @ 59 St

Posted by Gold_12TH on Fri Jun 8 23:18:43 2012

MTA will do extra inspections; asks riders to not eat in the subways to reduce vermin treat feasts

Subway rider Ana Vargas demonstrates the size of the rat that attacked her this morning on the downtown A train at Columbus Circle.

A hotel supervisor was forced to drop her pants in the middle of a full midtown subway car Friday — when a brazen rat darted up her trouser leg.

Ana Vargas, 40, said she was sitting in an A train heading downtown as it approached the Columbus Circle station about 7:50 a.m. when the rodent suddenly sprang.

“I thought it was my pants

moving,” Vargas told the Daily News. “It just crawled up my leg. I shook it and nothing came out.”

But then she realized she was being attacked.

“I said, ‘Oh, my God — it’s an animal on my leg!’ ” she recalled.

“He was very big. I was shaking, but nothing was coming out . . . I had to pull my pants down in front of everyone on the train.”

Vargas, who works as a supervisor at the Doubletree by Hilton hotel in midtown, said three men tried to shield her from flashing everyone on the train as she shook the furry culprit loose.

“I grabbed his head, because he was scratching me,” she said. “I didn’t want it to bite.”

The train came to a stop and Vargas dropped the rat as she ran for help on the platform.

“I was very nervous,” she said. “I was shivering, shaking — everything.”

Cops soon arrived and called a crew of EMTs to take Vargas to Roosevelt Hospital, where she was treated for scratches to her leg and thigh.

“It was burning me, but the doctors say it’s normal,” she said.

The rail-riding rat went missing after the sneaky skirmish.

Vargas was given a Tetanus shot before she was released from the hospital more than an hour later. But after a day spent at work, she said she may go back to the doctors to get her wounds checked out.

“It keeps burning me,” she said. “I’m worried.”

Vargas said she was traumatized by the freak rat raid and is now nervous about riding the train to work every day.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” she said.

In January, a straphanger took a video of a rat running around on a downtown 4 train. The video shows the rowdy rodent scrambling around the car until it skittered across a dozing man’s lap.

MTA supervisors conducted additional inspections after the most recent vermin incident, and will alert cleaners if needed, the agency said in a statement.

“It is important to note that we routinely clean subway cars, station platforms and track areas of debris that may attract rodents,” the authority said.

“We use rodent resistant trash receptacles and routinely power wash platforms. Additionally, we use both pest control contractors and in-house exterminating forces to bait track areas and nonpublic station areas.”

Riders can help by refraining from eating in the subways and by throwing trash in garbage cans, the authority said.

A spokesman from TWU Local 100 said the union launched an anti-rat campaign last year that caused the MTA to grant an additional $1.6 million for new trains to increase trash pickups.

The rat was probably looking for a place to hide. Anything tubular like a loose pants leg is attractive. I would swab the scratches with alcohol.

A rat can be rabid; any warm-blooded animal can, but known cases of rabid rats are exceedingly rare in the U.S. The latest info I could find (2001, IIRC) said there has never been a known case of rabies by rat=bite in the U.S.

What a Rat-tastrophe??? :-D

In all seriousness, what can anyone really do about the rat population? They have been here long before us, they will be here long after we are gone (either by God's doing or our own!!!) They are just a fact of life, when you kill a few, 1000s more take their place. To keep them out of the spotlight, so to speak, people should seriously try cleaning up after themselves. I cannot count how many times I see people leaving half eaten meals, snacks, and such behind with a receptacle only being a short walk away.

I really hope it turns out as well for you as it did for me. I decided that I didn't want one of those elaborate retirement "conventions" but wanted something that those who worked for me could afford. The overflow crowd that showed up was one of the most humbling experiences of my life and the XXXXL Boxers that some of the ladies gave me are hanging above my desk. But when one of the ladies came up and kissed me and said, "I want everyone here to know that there's a lot of 'NI@@ER in this boy" - well lets just say that's one of my favorite video clips. The crowd responded appropriately.

I don't know a lot about rabid behavior in animals, except that if you see a racoon in daylight, stay the F*** away from it.

But spesking generally, even if there's never been a known case of rat-to-human transmission, the possibility, no matter how remote, is scary enough. if this were me, or a loved one, I'd enocurage a very serious tslk with a knowledgeable doctor.

A few years ago (like 3 -5), a cave explorer in the UK died from raibies from a bat bite. That was also considered impossible, as supposedly, there's no rabies over there.

Bottom line is that rabies is more than 99.99% fatal if not treated. I wouldn't think that there is much of an upside to taking the gamble not to be treated.

Back in '99 or 2000, two hawks took up residence in the skies above Concourse Yard. In short order, the rat/squirrel/pigeon population disappeared and then the hawks moved on.

I think it's very much a sad and unfortunate situation. Passengers should not have to see and fight off rodents. However, if so many passengers didn't use the system as their personal trash, the rodent population wouldn't be so bad.
