Feds Order Audit Of MTA East Side Access Project

U.S. Department of Transportation Inspector General Calvin L. Scovel III says he will begin an audit of the East Side Access project later this month. The audit is being done because of cost overruns and delays with the project, which the federal government is helping to fund. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is also expected to announce today a new completion date and the latest price increase for the project. Wonder if they would have audited ARC too if that had proceeded. Probably would have. Back during the days when Alternative G was still among the options considered for ARC, the cost estimates were below $3 billion.

Read the EIS sometime. The engineers came to the inescapable conclusion that any effort tunneling that shallow under Manhattan was doomed to cost billions of dollars. You are not in any way qualified to question their conclusion.

Where were they 5 years ago ? The problem seems to be that once the momentum of the project got going everybody jumped on to get a piece of the pork :-)

They are paying a huge share of the cost, and they (Amtrak) are the ones who are not letting the LIRR into the Sunnyside/Harold area to do the work. Quit screwing around already, and get along with yourself!

That's what the Office of the Inspector General does. If the feds weren't paying for it there would be no grounds for an audit.
