Well, look at most of the freight routes into and out of Chicago, and how they mostly share line with high volumes of commuter rail and Amtrak traffic, especially between Chicago and Aurora, Chicago and South Bend, and several other routes leading towards St. Louis, Milwaukee and Detriot. The area is extremely congested, so what do they expect?? |

Not quite so, Paul. NS' Water Level Route to South Bend hosts the Lake Shore and Capitol, times both directions -- 4 trains in 24 hours. Commuter/interurban service to South Bend is on a separate RR.Yes, the BNSF ex CB&Q 'racetrack' has commuter trains and has for well over a century, however since BNSF freights can use the old ATSF without passenger trains because the Amtrak South West Chief has been switched to the old Burlington route. (As to capacity on the racetrack, before Amtrak, there were at least 11 passenger trains each direction between Chicago and Aurora.) It is on the ex Santa Fe where the newer larger yard was built. CSX has NO passenger trains on its Chicago to the east mainline. |

Chapter Two, The Amtrak route to Saint Louis has no more passenger frequencies now than in the 50s. Competing lines have no passenger trains. Routes to Milwaukee have many fewer passenger trains than pre Amtrak, and the list goes on. For a picture of operating competence by the Class i's, check out http://www.railroadpm.org/The dwell time in yards are embarrassing and the speed of trains not much better |
