Did a ride on Mount Washington's cog railway once and derailed. Leaves you with nice story and chuckles. Sympathies to the folks who had to go out there and jack it back onto the rails tho' ... |

Somehow I suspect nobody will want to ask for their money back. "Museum" trips never include a full display of emergency procedures and a structure walk now do they? :) |

I wonder if David Harrison (ChicagoPCCLCars) was on this trip??Reminds me of the APTA International Rail Rodeo in Miami, FL (Miami-Dade Transit) in 2004, when during the operating competition, (INCIDENTALLY!!) Chicago CTA was running during their turn in the competition, which was in MDT Palmetto Yard, adjacent to (and by rail physically connected to FEC's Hialeah Yard), and as they approached a portion of the course, the rail shifted beneath the train, and the train derailed. NYCT's team (which included yours truly, as this was my last few months at the TA) had got done early. However MNR, and I believe St. Louis, and SEPTA were marooned out there until at least 6 or 7 PM (NYCT was done by about 12 pm). Yeah, it was in itself something to talk about!!! No operator was found at fault, as the problem was caused by a track defect. |

No I was not on this trip. It seems to have been organized by actual railroad people, both working and retired. There were only 40 and they paid $100 apiece. The Snowflake Charter a month ago had 260 plus at $42. Advance warning....the 20th Century RR Club is planning a charter this coming October. Charter dates and where you can go is limited this year due to the track work on the Loop "L". The 20th Century charter is on a weekend when the Marathon is scheduled so there will be no track work that weekend. I have a private charter for MSI-Chicago and Tower 18 is scheduled to be closed so we will have to use the Red line subway to get from south to north. The crew on Sunday's derailment was the same as on the Snowflake, so when a CTA spokesperson said, "The crew is tops." she was correct. But at only 40 people I imagine it was only a two-car charter and the CTA added two more cars for a four car minimum. Present management doesn't like to run two car trains anymore, with one exception. They're afraid of getting stuck over a section gap.David Harrison |

My understanding is that the charter was NOT sponsored by Illinois Railway Museum. It was chartered by private persons, some or all of whom are IRM members, as a benefit to the museum. |

The best fan trip incident I ever experienced was back in the 1970's. It was a train of BMT Standards. The brakes tripped heading up the grade to Smith 9th Streets. When the motorman tried to get moving the combination of wet rail and the grade and curve caused the wheels to slip. On the second try he got moving with the wheels slipping like crazy. The sound from the gears was amazing!I was kind of hoping we would all get out and push :) |
