LIRR + J TRAIN to work in Lower Manhattan |

Posted by fset on Thu Apr 26 13:36:21 2012 My co-worker has been very adventurous in finding new ways to get to work, and I'd like you guys to review her latest way, and see if you can improve on it.She gets a ride in the morning to FREEPORT and sometimes she'll use the NICE bus into Jamaica for the [J] train down to Fulton/Bway-Nassau, but other times she'll catch the PEAK LIRR train to Jamaica, then get the [J] down to Fulton Street. We work on Water Street near South Street Seaport. Going home, she just uses the [J] from Broad Street (to insure a seat) and then NICE bus to get back home to Roosevelt. Is there any quick way to save on her fare? We realize that NICE bus to the subway is just 2 bus rides + transfer, but sometimes she's running late. Can anyone think of any further combinations, based on $Price + travel time. |

A from Fulton Street to Broadway Junction - - transfer to J towards Jamaica Center.She can also take the LIRR to Jamaaica but it's $165 for a monthly (between zones 3 and 4) pass - - plus the $2.25 subway fare. Or in the morning - - just pay the $5 one way fare from Freeport to Jamaica for the subway - - so she won't be late. |

The E is too far from the Water Street/Seaport area. You'd have to transfer to the A or C to be within walking distance. Two buses plus two subways? That's quite the commute, but a faster commute will have to involve the LIRR and cost more. |

If she's taking the N4 to Jamaica Center, she would save no time by riding the LIRR there, the J/Z is closer to the bus stop than the LIRR which is a 10 minute walk away and is faster than the E to Fulton at 44 minutes.If she can also use Roosevelt Field as a starting point, the fastest way would be to ride NICE to Mineola, then LIRR to NYP or Atlantic to the 2/3. It would still be cheaper than to ride LIRR from Freeport because it's in zone 4 instead of 7. She can also transfer to the J/Z at Jamaica and save more money while losing 10-15 minutes. There are a few more options to ride for one MetroCard fare but they take longer. |

That may be good she's a little late yet still fit her budget. But wait a minute... Ah! It's cheaper the other way while still saving 15-20 minutes. LIRR to Lynbrook, N4 to Jamaica Center, free MetroCard transfer to the J/Z. $5. |

Both of these are novel, imaginative approcahes. I often think of inserting a railroad ride in between a bus and a subway with a free transfer, but I may have actually done it only once. I'm not sure how many people would have the strength of will to leave a seat on the LIRR for a bus just to save money though. I used to skip the LIRR altogether and use a bus/subway combination, but I eventually lost my patience with that approach, and I don't have to go into Manhattan all that often that it really matters. The worst part is waiting for the bus home in Jamaica, which often borders on inhumane. |

I'm kinda too old to tolerate a 1h+ NICE bus ride but if I were younger, I would have woken up early to ride the N4 from Freeport to Jamaica to save money or tried the $5 route.I actually got off MNR trains at Marble Hill, Fordham and Wakefield to save money when I started working as a freelance in my thirties. The sad thing is I may have to work that way again these days. |

E traingNYPS - Jamaica takes 36 minutes. LIRR takes 20-23.If goinf between NJT & LIRR, and wait is more than 20-25 minutes, taking the E train can save 50 cents each way plus MC 7% discount. |
