Both of these are novel, imaginative approcahes. I often think of inserting a railroad ride in between a bus and a subway with a free transfer, but I may have actually done it only once. I'm not sure how many people would have the strength of will to leave a seat on the LIRR for a bus just to save money though. I used to skip the LIRR altogether and use a bus/subway combination, but I eventually lost my patience with that approach, and I don't have to go into Manhattan all that often that it really matters. The worst part is waiting for the bus home in Jamaica, which often borders on inhumane.
