Newkirk Plaza merchants are irate over fines for petty violations |
|
Posted by Newkirk Plaza David on Fri Apr 27 18:45:43 2012 NY Daily News story from 4/25I hever never heard about posting different prices for men and women haircuts is illegal - - you go to any nail salon and men's manicure and pedicure costs more than women - - lax enforcement I guess. I do agree on the sales tax issue for medicated products - - no excuses. |

I wholly support the city's side in this case. Consumer protection laws have to be enforced or they will be useless. |

There has ALWAYS been a different price for men's or women's haircuts. Ergo: Men see a barber, Women see a stylist. If a man were to visit a hair stylist he would pay the same as a woman. If a woman would go to a barber, she would come out with a haircut same as a man. If they wanted a more complicated haircut, they would pay a more complicated price. How complicated is that? ROAR |

How is the store profiting from charging tax on medicated Chapstick? The money from the tax is going to the City anyway. Maybe the City should be fined for accepting the tax it should not be receiving in the first place? Also, I thought credit card minimums were against the law. So how could they be fined for not posting a credit card minimum sign? The fine should be for not accepting the credit card if that was the case. |

"Also, I thought credit card minimums were against the law."Credit card minimums and surcharges are almost always a violation of the merchant's contract with the credit card company. Merchants do it anyway, but they can lose their merchant account if someone complains and the merchant is caught doing it. It's also bad business, because it annoys the potential credit card customer more than it makes the cash customer happy. When I see credit card minimums and/or surcharges, I try to shop elsewhere. I used to have a merchant account when I had my own business, and I played by the rules, so I don't have lots of sympathy for those who ignore what they agreed to do when they got the merchant account. |

What?! No uproar about this not being on topic? I did see a reference to subway construction in the neighborhood, though not the thrust of the article. It does seem the enforcement of petty rules is pretty anal compulsive. I agree with the concept of a minimum amount for debit/credit purchases. I'm tired being behind people buying a cup of coffee and paying with plastic. God did give us cash for a reason. |
