Latest Bleecker St. Station (IRT) Update - 4/23/2012 |
|
Posted by William A. Padron on Mon Apr 23 10:34:14 2012 The new southern end of the uptown platform at the Bleecker Street station [IRT #6 line] now has the entrance/exit open there (i.e. at East Houston Street), as viewed this morning on 4/23/2012. The new transfer on that side to the IND below is not open yet, though, as the connecting stairs are still covered up.-William A. Padron ["Bleecker"] |

It closed immediately upon the opening of the extension. Initially blocked off by blue construction wall, they've already started bricking up the old platform edges to construct some new offices or something. |

I went through there today as i frequently do and it is amazing how quickly they got that in shape. Just last week the tiles were still the old yellowed IND tiles on the staircase on the north side. The entrance on the south side of Houston just magically appeared where there was nothing before. Shades of 76th St... Kind of funny too that an IND entrance gets you to an IRT station.I'm surprised they haven't opened a section of the internal staircase to the Bway Lafayette station. I guess they still need the room to work on the escalator. Soon enough... |

I was just there half an hour ago. The south end of the 6 platform still has that new smell to it. Anyone know if they are planning to put up more tiles/mosaics along the part that just has the white tiles for now? |

The double wide stairway from the NB #6 platform is in. The contractor is installing handrails, and steel treadles on the stairway steps. The stairways leading down to the IND platforms are in, and about completed. with exception to ADA elevators, the connection is about done.Interesting fact is that the IND transfer area under the IRT RoW, and under the NB #6 platform has original IND construction. I recall prior to the last station rehab, the south end platforms of Bway Lafayette having mid level Mezzanine walkways located between the station columns that eventually met a blocked off stairway at the south end of the station. The southern mezzanine, and stairs have been closed off for as long as I can recall, at least from the early 1960's, and may have have once connected to a mezzanine south of the IRT with stairs up to the surface. Without a pre-1990's rehab station diagram it is pure conjecture. |

They would have to had ducked under the IRT. I don't remember ever seeing that. However, I have been looking closely at that section of the station and I always wondered if it did indeed do that, but again it didn't seem to have enough clearance. As far as the south mezzanine is concerned, it was definitely an IND entrance. As of less than 2 weeks ago, the Mulberry St entrance still had the yellowish tiles and was being used as a construction entrance. They are bright white today. I was amazed that they transformed it that quickly. Also, the entrance across Houston by the new REI must have always been there. When they first started working you could see the mezzanine from the platform too and it was typical IND. |

The amount of old brick tunneling or other structures under Lafayette Street that were visible during construction was really cool!!Also, I suppose it's about time we got a transfer between the IND and the uptown #6- only 55 years after the downtown transfer became available!! |

Actually, this leads me to another question- does anyone know if, when the connection to the downtown #6 was made, was it part of a plan for bi-directional transfer that just ran out of money and had to wait- and if so, how far did construction get back then?Or was the original connectio set up for the downtown side with no real thought, at the time, for conection to the uptown 6? |

So how far east did the original mezzanine extend? When I first used the Bleecker St./B'way-Lafayette transfer in 1967, I remember seeing a closed-off passageway, separated from the open parts of the station by iron bars, like the ones used in some IND stations to separate the far-paid and free areas. It extended eastward from the open parts of the station and had several old signs in it, but I don't remember what they said, or if I could even read them. I think I wondered even then if it extended under the IRT tracks. |

I think I wondered even then if it extended under the IRT tracks. It was east of the IRT. It seems that NY Times took down the diagram I used to hot link so I can't show it but next time you are there look at the ceiling. All four IRT tracks are above within the IND platforms length. Same for the BMT above the other end. |

That triangle is occupied by a bank atm, and in any case the IND mezzanine was already there. The Mulberry St staircase is behind the bank. |

I seem to remember reading that even the transfer between the downtown IRT and the IND was basically an afterthought. When the Bleecker St. southbound station platform was first extended south, they noticed that, if they didn't completely close up the new wall, there would be a passage to the IND Broadway-Lafayette St. station, which was just on the other side, with a floor at the same level. So they decided to leave the opening in place, since it essentially had zero added cost. It might even have been cheaper than completing a tiled wall between the stations. |

And now, I can tell you for today on Saturday, April 28, 2012...1. The entry/exit on the NB platform at Bleecker Street itself is closed off. Any passenger must use the new one at East Houston Street, and there is a new station agent's booth that is opened. 2. One of the Heins & LaFarge designed terra-cotta "B" plaques has been placed back on the wall at the north end of the SB platform. 3. Striping in the middle of the 1904-built walls includes removing the concrete lining and showing the bricks. And there you have it... -William A.
