A disturbing YouTube video showing teenagers jumping on to subway tracks as a train approaches is causing outrage among subway riders and neighborhood residents.

The video, posted Monday, shows the teens jumping on to a set of tracks at a Brooklyn subway stop. Onlookers scream at them, but the teens continue to linger even as the lights of an approaching train come into view.

Ultimately, the boys did make it back on to the platform, the last one with a mere 10 seconds to spare before the train pulled in. It appears they were playing a potentially deadly game of chicken, competing to see who dares to stay on the tracks the longest before the train comes.

The person who shot the video spoke to News 4 over the phone. He wanted to remain anonymous.

"They could have killed more people on the subway, should the train have to stop suddenly, or the people on the train could get hurt," he said. "They're putting everyone at risk."

Subway riders at the station expressed disappointment and anger.

"I guess it's a commentary on what's happening," said Dr. Barbara Gardner of Crown Heights. "Kids don't have any purpose. Life means nothing, or they don't understand why they're on Earth. This is really sad."

Joshua Olliviere said, "They need some structure in their lives. It's a shame that they come to dive in front of a train to entertain themselves."

MTA officials said the teenagers in the video should be arrested.

“Playing on or near subway tracks is one of the most dangerous things anyone can do, and while you can’t outlaw stupidity you have to remember that 146 people were struck by subway trains last year and 47 of them died as a result," the MTA said in a statement Tuesday. "The individuals depicted in this video should be taken into custody and then they should have their heads examined.”

The MTA said it has passed the video along to police, who are investigating.

I wonder how old that video is? Looks like something that made the rounds a year ago.

Either way, everyone is dressed for winter so it wasn't taken in the last week or so.

looks like it's on a grade meaning the T/O's range of vision would not allow him/her to see anything from a distance. and the signals are to the right, platform to the left and probably timers which means less attention to the roadbed and more attention on the signals.

Video shows teens playing 'chicken' with subway: MyFoxNY.com

It is hard to make out exactly what everyone in the YouTube video is shouting. But the man who shot it told Fox 5 that 10 to 20 teenagers were cheering each other on as an older woman nearby screams at them to get off the tracks at the Kingston Avenue station in Brooklyn in December 2011.

They boys and girls take turns jumping down, then jumping up, some sneaking glances for the train, until they hear the rumble of the car and see the light in the distance.

The man who took the video said this went on for 5 minutes before the train arrived. He said a woman screamed at the kids to stop. He said she was hysterical by the time she could see the train.

He said there was no cell service to call 911.

The photographer didn't want his name used because he didn't want the kids upset.

I'm sure there's more than one pay phone in that particular station. Whether they work is another question.

In either case, since the article only alluded to use of cell phones, it can be one of two possibilities:

1. The guy tried his cell phone first, only to discover there was no service, then did not search for a pay phone.
2. The guy found a pay phone, only to discover it wasn't working, then tried his mobile, only to discover it had no service. The report then omitted the part about finding the non-functional pay phone for whatever reason.

I'm sure, in either case, he wouldn't have gone on to comb the station in search for a working pay phone, so instead he shot the video. Since he would already have his cell phone in his hand after trying to call 911, it only makes sense to skip over the pay phone search and go directly to shooting video.
