Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Sun Apr 15 09:32:50 2012 Subway worker: I nearly fried to death!By JENNIFER FERMINO and FRANK ROSARIO, NY Post, April 14, 2012 NY Post Article Link LUCKY TO BE ALIVE: Michael Lee, lying in the hospital yesterday, has burns over 30 percent of his body. Those burns — which cover up to 30 percent of his body — were so bad that doctors are considering performing skin grafts. A veteran subway operator miraculously survived after accidentally dropping a 200-pound piece of metal equipment onto an electrified third rail, sparking an explosion that set him ablaze, officials said. Michael Lee — a married father working an overtime shift on his day off — told The Post from his hospital bed that he was counting his blessings. “It’s a miracle I’m alive,” said Lee, 45, who was in the burn center at Jacobi Medical Center in The Bronx. “The man upstairs is looking over my shoulder.” Lee suffered second-degree and third-degree burns in the horrific accident Thursday at the 239th Street Yard. Lee had been preparing a work train when he dropped the equipment — known as a coupler — that he was using to connect two different types of subway cars. Bolts flew off the third rail with such force that it knocked him down, instantly engulfing him in flames. He tried rolling on the ground to put the fire out but the flames were too powerful, said Kevin Harrington, a Transport Workers Union Local 100 vice president. Frantic, Lee ripped off his burning clothes with his hands. Traumatic as it was, Lee — who remained conscious throughout — said that it could have been much worse. “The adapter I was handling could have ricocheted off the rail and hit me in the chest like a missile,” he said. “It could have been deadly.” Another subway worker, Lorraine Sills, was hospitalized and treated for trauma. As distraught as she was about seeing her colleague nearly burned alive, Lee credited Sills with calling for help. “I was very grateful that she acted so fast,” he said. “She saved my life. I wouldn’t be alive if she wasn’t helping me.” |

The SMEE cars have H2C couplers. The R142s also have a distinct coupler type. The work locomotives and most of the MoW fleet have MCB couplers. If a work locomotive were called upon to tow a train of passenger cars as dead weight, it would need an adapter. |

Me too!!! What is crazy is that in this line of work, you will be surprised how much crazy stuff unfolds when one works overtime!! I know two conductors already involved in trespasser fatalities in recent time who ended up in that situation while working their rest days!! :-( |

TA work locomotives being used to haul passenger equipment, and using certain work motors (aka retired R-series former passenger equipment) to some types of MOW equipment (flat cars, pump equipment, etc.). Even on MNR, LIRR, PATH and NJT, standard locomotives need compromise couplers (coupler adapters) to be able to hook up to and pull EMU equipment. |

Me too!!! In this line of work, most of the craziest things tend to go down when someone works overtime (i.e. working rest days, making an extra trip, etc.). Working that almighty extra dollar can come at some extreme costs!! |

I was under the impression that the SMEE work cars were all converted to Knuckle type. But then again it coulda been an extender like they used for the LIRR caboose transfer. |
