It is time to put security cameras on all subway cars. At least we'll get some good pictures of these dudes splattering themselves across the tracks of New York. And it is about time we stopped stopping the subway to clean these things up. They do not stop the LIRR just because some dog (canid) got squished under a train, why stop NYCT just because it was a person. It is a person no longer, just a collection of squishy remains. We can hose down the trains when they get back to the yards, and the rats can take whatever is left on the tracks. I mean, really! It is a subway system and it MUST keep running! ROAR |

Of all the things I might miss about the wide world of NYCT, the one thing I don't miss is my Nextel beeping in the early morning, alerting me to another 12-9. When I tracked delays by incident type, 12-9s were running <80 per year. Last year it was >140 and this year seems like it's going to be a record breaker. Something has changed...... |

Guys who we know likely would not be working a tough line like that on a Sunday morning that early. Seniority! With that said, it was N201 crew, first trip out Astoria, went, what is it, 4 stops? Their day went downhill before it even started! |

No. It will also slow the trains down thus reducing service and increasing crowding on the platforms. As it is the train can stop plus or minus six feet and still plant the C/R on the zebra. To achieve such precise stops the train will have to come in much more slowly and the last two feet or so will the try the patience of any LION, goose, T/O or C/R.ROAR |

It seems to me the problem is that the cops take so long.Several years ago there was a 12-9 at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue on the uptown side. Both sides were closed for a while but, by the time I left work, downtown service had resumed and I was waiting on the downtown platform. The last step in the process before the uptown side reopened was for some cop with lots of gold braid on his cap to walk the track from one end of the station to the other staring at the track apparently to make sure that every scrap of the dearly departed had been picked up. |

The problems are more complex than that.* Everyone these days has a cell phone that does video. You can't be seen doing anything that in any way conveys disrespect for the dearly departed. Care must be taken to remove the deceased with dignity. * All "evidence" must be preserved and thorough investigation must be completed in anticipation of the inevitable law suit. * This was an elevated structure. Extra care must be taken lest a spleen or other body part might strike a passer-by leading to additional litigation. |

All kidding aside, the LIRR takes far longer to resolve a 12-9 (whatever they call it) and they have far more favorable conditions under which they remove the body. At speed, the train is likely to pass completely over the unfortunate one. |

12-9 April Fools day news coverage... 1 dead, 1 survive |

Posted by Gold_12TH on Sun Apr 1 21:20:35 2012, in response to The Month has Started.................., posted by Bill from Maspeth on Sun Apr 1 06:35:37 2012. The NYPD said two men were struck by subway trains in two separate incidents Sunday morning. One man has died while the other is expected to survive.Authorities say the first incident happened on the 'N' line in Astoria around 5:15 a.m. as the 24-year-old man fell onto the elevated tracks. The unidentified man was intoxicated according to police. The victim was crushed by the train and pronounced dead at the scene. The MTA suspended service for two hours in both directions as MTA officials and police detectives investigated the incident. Police said in the second incident, a 46-year-old man was on the tracks just south of the 96th Street station in the Upper West Side around 8:05 a.m. The conductor of the train told police that he was unable to stop in time before he struck the victim. The unidentified man was taken to St. Luke's Hospital and is in serious but stable condition. The accident stranded passengers, including churchgoers headed to Palm Sunday services, on the train for about an hour. --- http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/1-man-dead-1-injured-after-being-hit-by-subway-trains-20120401-gjw#ixzz1qqFOXgYU |

I'd say that less than 1/2 of all 12-9s make the news. Considering that there has been a marked increase in 12-9s over the last 2-3 years, even if the same ratio make the news, there would be more reported. Add to that the number of cell phone users who have become opportunistic reporters and yet more incidents are covered. |

I didn't realize that the number had increased and I had thought that maybe 10% or less used to get reported. Out here if it happens outside (light rail or Metrolink) it makes the paper, but if it happens underground probably not. Not sure why that is. I used to think that it was media cooperation to discourage copycats (few suicides are ever covered by the news), but now I think that LACMTA maybe better controls the indoors than outdoors. |

Then they should issue 2 tickets for anyone leaning over the platform and looking the wrong way. Most people have no idea how ,amy people are struck in the back of the head by the arriving train while they are trying to see if they just missed one, or simply do not know which way the train will be approaching from. |
