That station should finally be officially re-named "Myrtle Av". Leave the pretty mosaics alone, but change the column signs and map names. (Does the R160 refer to both names? If so, change that too.)It's ridiculous to keep the "Willoughby" in the name when that end has been abandoned for decades. The true "Myrtle-Willoughby" station is Jay St, with entrances and exits on both of those streets (and Fulton St too). Many if not most IND stations have/had two or more entrances, yet their names usually included only one of the street names. Some exceptions, like Bedford-Nostrand (G) exist, but both of those ends are still active. Can anyone explain why 174-175 St and 182-183 St (B,D) are called that, but 46 St (M,R) is not called 46-48 St? |

The reason that the Concourse stations have the double names is due to the unique nature of the line and the street itself. Several cross streets pass under the Concourse rather than being at the same level with the Concourse so that at the stations, you mentioned, passengers go upstairs to access the street while the other end of the station while still underground passengers go downstairs to access the cross street. |

The long closed Junius St mezzanine has been closed for eons, and the Powell St entrance is used. There are many more. |

AFAIK, W 4 St never had an entrance or exit at W 4 St itself. The original station signs read "West 4th Street Waverly Place" and there is an entrance near Waverly Place. |

Thanks.The service cuts in the mid 70's included stuff like the AA eliminated during the midnight hours with the A going local and the GG being cut back to Queens Plaza evenings and midnights. Becasue of this fewer motormen and conductors were needed, so some to them were temporarily assigned as token clerks and bus drivers. |

Both 174 and 175 Streets pass under the Concourse via beautiful arches, without intersecting it. At each end of the 174-175 station, going upstairs takes you only to the Concourse, not to either cross-street. Going down at the south end takes you to 174 St; going down at the north end is no longer possible, but it used to take you to 175 St.That still doesn't explain the dual station name, even when both ends were fully open. They could have chosen one street name and still had both exits, like at most IND stations. |
