Adrian Shooter retired July of last year. Besides the 'Evergreen' project, this Silver Train is one of his babies. The amazing thing about this whole set up was that what you see below is not a press event. We showed up unannounced, and took a whole bunch of pictures. Not only were we not harrassed, the train was beautiful, and the friendly staff answered all questions politely and with grace.

Chiltern Mainline's Silver Train (luxury InterCity service) is leaving Banbury, Oxfordshire--the first stop after leaving from London Marylebone

EWS's 67 012 'Shropshire Lad' ironically based in the Scottish Region is providing push motive power today

The interior of this Mk.III is... luxurious!

Traincrew in impeccable uniform is preparing to start the train in time for the 12:20 departure from Marylebone

Mk.III DVT 82 303 basks in the sunshine

Business Zone is Wi-Fi equipped and provides a contrast to the red brick of the historic Marylebone station

We're 'OFF'--after dropping off some crews

Even the toilet has Dyson Airblade hand dryers... all snugly fit in an Mk.III bathroom stall

Those Mark IIIs have manual doors? Man, those will be missed. Last IE cars to have those were the Cravens and Mark IIDs.

The dummies in IE are still in the process of scrapping their Mark IIIs, which were only two decades old. Nobody likes the CAF-built Mark IVs.

Yes but the doors are now remotely locked and you can't open them anymore when running. According to Wikipedia, Chiltern is planning to fit automatic doors on them.

I think they look weird in that livery.

I don't mind the doors not opening; it's the windows I'd be most concerned about. (Used to do this all the time, you see; of course, while keeping head on shoulders.)

Oh, I don't know. While I heard a lot about making the doors locked, no one told me if the windows are locked too. But that would also make the doors unopenable since there are no door knobs on the inside of MkIII coaches' doors.

Thinking the English way, I assume that they don't lock the windows but I wouldn't bet on it. (And BTW, I used to do that too.)

The reason Mk.3 had no door knobs inside is because back when they had knobs inside, they had a lot of 'accidental openings' while the train is travelling at high speeds, resulting in 'suicides' of otherwise successful and content people.

Also, the other reason is to force whoever might be tempted to open the door while the train is pulling into the station to at least lean out and look to see if there are anyone standing beyond the yellow line on the platform before they opened the door to knock them over!

Thinking the English way, I assume that they don't lock the windows but I wouldn't bet on it. (And BTW, I used to do that too.)

I'm not sure how they would ever retrofit Mk.3 with sliding doors. I guess we shall see.

The usual way to do automatic doors on the Mark 3 is with plug doors, ain't it?

None of the IE/CIE cars with manual doors had the doorknobs inside. They were all outside, whether Mark 2D, Cravens, Park Royals, Laminates, or even the former AEC 2600-class DMUs that got converted to 6100/6300-class push-pull suburban cars. (Only NIR cars that I recall visiting the Republic that had the manual doors were the Mark 2Bs on the Enterprise.)

Upon checking http://www.railforums.co.uk, the good news is you can still drop the windows down now, the bad news is they started retrofitting power doors on the Chiltern's MkIII so you soon won't be able to do it there.

You could probably still do it on the HST125 for a while though.

I don't recall Mk3 ever having door handles/knobs inside. Mk2 coaches didn't have them and some of the Mk1 family (coaches and EMUs) didn't have them either.

It wasn't uncommon to see bags or people themselves being knocked off by the half-open doors of an arriving train. That's for sure.

At least on the Southern, people were used to the ten-door EPBs and generally backed off a bit. Those had knobs inside too.

I'll see if i can find pics of the new Chiltern Mk3 after dinner.

Twenty years later . . . ? No, that's Vyvyan from the "University Challenge" episode (oddly titled "Bambi"; the title only becomes clear towards the end of the episode). This is the same episode that Motörhead guest-starred on, playing "Ace Of Spades" . . .
