The famous train terminal will get a new restaurant in Vanderbilt Hall, a renovated 42nd Street entrance and a historic train exhibit, officials announced Tuesday.

The festivities will kick off Feb. 1, 2013, 100 years to the day after the landmarked building opened and the first train departed. A new logo featuring the terminal's famous clock atop the information booth was also unveiled Tuesday. The hands are positioned at 7:13—which is 19:13 in military time, to honor the year in which the building opened.

The MTA also has big plans for Vanderbilt Hall, by the 42nd Street entrance. The real estate division will put out a request for proposals in the coming weeks for a restaurant operator to open a café there. It would occupy about 20% of the enormous two-sided hall, where special events are staged and the annual, monthlong holiday market takes place.
The plan also involves improving Vanderbilt Hall's utilization, now currently occupied by various events and exhibits only two-thirds of the year.
“We will repurpose Vanderbilt Hall, adding more arts and culture programs, maybe even poetry readings,” said Rande Fleischer, senior director of business development of Metro North and a key staff leader on the centennial project.
The 42nd Street entrance's foyer will also get a major facelift, starting next spring, to make it more elegant.
In addition, the New York Transit Museum will curate five exhibitions throughout the year, including a rare public display in May of historic train cars and activities centered on the history of railroading.

The train display is probably in reference to National Train Day, which is being held at GCT instead of Washington this year.

...whose historical connection with GCT would be what? Well, still, I'm delighted that they're still around, even if in this case somewhat out of context.

O.K. - What enterprising travel agent will organise transatlantic trips to incorporate the centenary celebrations of GCT and the 150th birthday of the London Underground, which very nearly coincides (January 2013) (8-) ?

Wish I could come back to London (never did finish riding the entire LU while I was there in July 2009) next year so I could ride the LU again. Would love to get in the record books for riding the entire LU in less than 19h18m (IIRC, the record according to the BBC Tube program that featured two guys attempting to get into the record books for riding the whole LU in the fastest time (they didn't break the record, BTW)).

Don't know when I'll be able to get back overseas again, especially since airfares to Europe are quite expensive now (e.g., $1200-$1300 RT on United or Virgin Atlantic from EWR to HLR or a little < $1000 on an unknown carrier using those same two airports -- fares found using kayak.com this morning putting in dates for this July).

I paid $199 airfare each way on Virgin Atlantic (EWR to HLR) in 2009. Great deal back then.
