No wonder Amtrak has so many problems.Well then, either Amtrak needs to: a) receive more in terms of subsidy b) cut operating costs in terms of operating practices, energy consumption, and wages for employees That was highway robbery. And yet, the train isn't empty... |

Amtrak is increasing fares slowly yet continuously to maximize revenue knowing their services are in high demand. So far, for MOST routes, including the Northeast, passenger counts are not dropping by any significant amount. California is the exception, Pacific Surfliner has lost quite a bit of riders since the last hike. |

They need to make a cheaper class of service... throw two commuter style cars like MultiLevels onto each train and charge chinabus rates for those cars. Do not allow access to cafe car (or even other cars, put up that metal door on the first amfleet). They'll be rolling in the dough. |

Amtrak has the rail monopoly, so of course not. But, if the cost/income ratio of 2 full cars of people paying $20/seat from NY to Philly on a train that was doing that anyway with a crew that was doing that anyway is actually worse than not doing it at all, then we should get rid of the NEC and pave it over with a busway, because it would be proof that buses are far more cost effective at transporting people. |

And those buses don't have any safety overlords looking at their operations. Never mind the buses never doing average speeds of 70 mph or faster. It's got nothing to do with monopoly. All due to FRA regulations that aren't to do with safety. |

There's no way to make those FRA regulations go away though. So unfortunately, in the US, I guess it is true. Trains are less cost effective than buses, and the Northeast would be better served with a busway. This sucks. |

There's no way to make those FRA regulations go away thoughThere's always a way. Claiming that there is not is claiming that the constitution's been done away with. And if people are still riding Amtrak, turning the NEC into a busway will not be more cost-effective at all, as you're trying to define cost-effectiveness (most likely the $77 per head for NYP-PHL is designed to keep room on the train for people bound for BAL and WAS; and if you buy online, it's way cheaper than $77 OW); buses that are supposedly more "cost-effective" than trains don't run on busways, remember, so they don't pay the full cost of their infrastructure by a long shot. |

It's a last minute fare on the most heavily traveled portion of that train's route. They should soak last minute travelers for every penny they can get along that portion so as to alleviate their 'many problems', most of which are caused by chronic underfunding. |
