I checked the service guide on the back of the Manhattan bus map, and I see the buses on Madison Ave. (M1/2/3) only have one route running overnight, and that runs only hourly, so I guess that's a good reason not to suggest it as a subway alternative. The buses on Lexington (M101/102/103) are also listed as running hourly (every 60 minutes), but all three run, which I would hope means service every 20 minutes, but I don't know if that can be relied on. ... Well, I just now checked the schedules for those lines, and it looks like overall, the nighttime service is approximately every 20 minutes between the three of them.
