Perhaps they simply wanted a longer track with which to move the train around while performing multiple couples/uncouples. Hard to do that in the yard if other moves are going on. |

These are excellent shots showing the comparison on the 2 styles. I'd like to see those angled panels up front extended up and and across the entire front end of the car. It's look much better. Even with bright blue or orange or even yellow. safety colors do brighten up the first thing seen as it comes in to a platform. |

I used to watch the crews cut and add cars at Main St. when trains used to be cut to 8 cars in midday. There were some instances where someone had to apply some gentle force in the form of a hammer to get the couplers to separate. |

I watched a crew do a light rail add in Denver a few years back. It seemed very straightforward. The couplers on the SD-100s and SD-160s are fixed in place and they lined right up. The next thing you knew - boom! it was done. |

When I was a M/M most of the drawheads did line up by themselves. It was rare to have to do it manually even though the older cars did not have coupler centering devices like the NTTs. |

When I got trained, had to go on the ground and check even if they were lined up for the add. Then there were Van Dorns which always sought the extreme of one side or the other. :) |

Usually H type drawheads could be checked for alignment from above by looking down at them from the anticlimber threshold plate. Van Dorns were a different animal altogether as were the IRT J drawheads as found on Lo-Vs and the MCBs on flats and other work equipment. |

Yep ... there were still some VD's around at Coney and so we got the nickel tour on handling those along with "fat chance, but we gotta show you anyhow." Yep ... I remember being taught that, but you had to be concerned about the other section lineup as well. Of course nobody did it the way we were trained ... give it a bump and hope for a happy blow. :) |
