Um, at 30 MPH cars need to keep a sufficient distances between each other that you can usually cut in without seriously risking an accident. It is in stop and go traffic, where cars are much closer together, when it is hard to cut in. So I don't know what you are talking about.

There was a sign saying Arlington with a left turn arrow. That was the direction I needed to go since I was looking for the Washington Monument so I turned left and found myself on the 14th Street Bridge on my way to Arlington.

That was YOUR fault. It said Arlington. It did not give any indication that it was the way you needed to go. So you should NOT have turned there.

Geez - I've seen maps where you go from the Belt to the Laurelton Pkwy. which then becomes the Southern State or the Cross Island.

That fouled me up one time, I did not have GPS, I got off in error at exit 23B and headed into local streets toward Valley Stream,a truck driver got me up to The Southern Ste. Pkwy. I was OK then.
The people I went to see are moving to North Carolina, so I won't be able to mess up in that NY area again.

I remember now after seeing a map today, I got off the beltway and was on Rte. 27, the Sunrise Highway. I realize now the beltway curves and tales you right up to the Southern State Parkway. My bad, very bad:(

It's more coincidental than planned, particularly when you consider the original numbering on the Cross Island ran southbound from the Whitestone Bridge and continued onto the Southern State.

I'm judging you based solely on the content of your posts, where you repeatedly mention your inability to recognize basic roadway features such as medians, one-way signs, detour signs, and pathfinding signs. I'd have noticed the road was divided by LOOKING and SEEING the divider before I started my turn, GPS or no GPS. Someone who doesn't see that is driving blindly.

If you've got a left exit coming up, you've got at least a mile from the first sign of it. If you've been paying attention to the signage, you wouldn't need to cross multiple lanes of traffic at the last moment, because you wouldn't be in the right lane. Failure to observe traffic, signage, and surroundings makes a person a bad driver.

I disagree. It seems deliberate. The numbers are not original, they use A/B for otherwise completely unrelated interchanges; like Hillside Avenue and Union Turnpike being 28A and 28B respectively and there happen to be numbering gaps exactly where the interchanges are as many miles apart (no 10, 12 and 16).

You probably would have lost less time simply continuing east on Sunrise Hwy, either until your destination, or until the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (and back onto the Southern Pkwy there).

Thanks! I ended up turning left on a large street in Vally Stream , which took me to The Southern State, after a while. I do have a compass in my car, so that helped a lot for direction.

It's still less likely than a person having an inaccurate impression of their location.

I don't think "I'm on the FDR at 96th Street" or "I'm at Nostrand Avenue and Emmons Avenue" gives an inaccurate impression. It's certainly more accurate than the GPS thinking you're somewhere you're not.
