Freight cars are actually narrower than passenger cars

Which ones are you referring to? Passenger cars have a max 10' 6" width; AAR Plates B through E specify a width of 10' 8". High/wides are even wider than that of course.

check at platform height, you find them actually a lot narrower at that height.

Troop transports could be done with any train, however there were special troop trains made up of box cars with windows and inter car doors. They had a galley (kitchen) car with the division's own cooks doing the work.

Him just thunk that a dingy green car looked like a troop car. But actually the SP cars were gray. About the same shade of gray as a NAVY battle ship.

I remember reading EOH and WOH cars cannot run together in a train, IIRC something about the compatibility of the door controllers. Of course that could also be BS.

Train stops with the center door of the cab car at the mini platform. One stop, with a conductor helping the individual on/off.

Barely a stop that's not on too much of a curve, or splits a street.
