Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Sun May 15 12:24:30 2011 Now having foamed over 2 very nice freights CSX NI-SELKIRK sent our way, I was planning to go either along the PVL or Main/Bergen and shoot over there, when as I headed southward on Route 9W (which of note, passes directly over the south mouth of the Haverstraw Tunnel on the CSX River Line), I saw this BEAUTIFUL sight, and just HAD to stop, go out with the camera and shoot!!! Foamin' plenty now, and you will see why!!!Look out over the land, with the groan of powerful six-axles reverberating across the countryside, along comes northbound CSX Q410, Rice Yard Waycross GA to Selkirk Yard Albany NY, with yet another CW44AH 578 with sister (thru reclassification from a CW44AC) 5103 with a mixed mass of manifest from the South, apporaching........  Gettin' closer......  Closer......  And ready for the tunnel, with a beautiful Nathan K-series aingin' her heart out as a warning to any dumbasses caring to be in the tunnel!!  NOW, THE CHASE IS ON!! Back to Hsverstraw Station a little to the north to catch this bad ass bitch!!! And of course, you know you friendly, neighborhood #1 Conductor NEVER misses a train!! (Barely made it thanks to "Sunday drivers" going 10 MPH below the speed limit) and I got back just in time (while parking off the side of the road by the crossing) t make the catch!! Q410, ALL UP IN YA' FACE!!! :-D  Passin' the station, with not a single nod!!   Thunderin' on by with the usual mixed bag 'o' junk (boxcars, hoppers, tanks, trash containers, etc etc)  Off to Selkirk  On the way back, real quick, we pass thru the town of Congers, where yet another old NYC station stands, not as good as the other stations, but happy to see it still exists    Hope you all have enjoyed the action!! Thank you, sir!! :-)Intermodal dominates the River Line (over a dozen, counting for most of the River Line's traffic, and seemingly between North Jersey and Chicago), as does ethanol unit trains from the Chicago area (about 3 to 4 on a given day, almost all with run-through foreign power), which was what I hoped I would catch, but hey save it for next time. There are only 4 manifests each way here to and from Selkirk (Q409/10, Selkirk to/from Waycross GA, Q417/18 Selkirk to/from Camden NJ, Q439/38 Selkirk to/from Hamlet NC and Q433/34 Selkirk to/from Oak Island/Newark NJ). I would like to catch the Mon-Fri local C712 based out of Kingston Yard, and switches all the way down to Bergenfield, NJ and it has some fairly photogenic locations to watch the switching (when C712 gets started, most of the time the River Line practically shuts down, as their work often has their train fouling up single track in the single track locations of their sidings to be worked). In this shot, just north of the Haverstraw NYC station, is the siding for Beckerle Lumber, which gets regular visits from C712.  Sadly, I have heard from another railfan there have been times the engineer and/or conductor on C712 get pissy about being photographed, and have even tossed water bottles at fans and photographers trackside, which I must say as a fellow railroader, is very stupid, unprofessional, uncalled for and very much criminal as if it hits someone, that IS bonafide assault!! |

I agree totally with unused passenger stations, especially the ones with a very old school charming yet beggingly commuter look to them, beggin' for a train to stop and receive and discharge passengers there. But for that to ever happen on the River Line, CSX would have to be okay with it, more investment put in (sidings, signals, track, battle off the NIMBYs, etc.) for any of that to be possible, plus better access into NYC. |

Saw a guy walk out of the bar JUST as a slow moving car container train got to the crossing - the guy looks down the tracks, sees that there is probably 100+ cars on this slow mover...and walks right back into the bar.... |
