I didn't realize that transit systems let operators handle the money. I don't know that I've ever seen that anywhere.

Many NJ Transit bus routes are "full service" meaning the drivers collect cash and give change as needed.
Mostly the 100-series routes to/from NYC as well as several in South Jersey.
Private companies such as DeCamp, Red and Tan and Lakeland also do this.

Really outstanding stuff! I just viewed all your highlights. Lots of luck and enjoy your road trip - a friend of mine did a 3 month road trip all around the country a couple years ago and enjoyed it immensely. I hope to do something like that myself one day!

MTA busies did the same thing as NJ transit bus routes i was a kid. they made change and u put the fare into the box. than went to metro card and change only, no more making change.

It was a common practice at one time (WAY before my time lol!), but from what I gather as more incidents of bus drivers getting mugged, just about all transit agencies switched over to exact change fareboxes. That NJ Transit still has the full service policy on some of its routes is just a relic that never died, AFAIK.

I actually finished the trip over nine months ago... look at the dates. :-)

I ran out of time to post Memphis pics while I was traveling, and I'm just now getting around to doing it. :-( Better late than never!

I've got one more batch coming from Memphis, for the Main Street Trolley.

Some more stuff from my trip last summer. Here's the Riverfront line at Monroe St., in a telephoto view from Mud Island. Based on reports on ABC news tonight, this area is probably under water right now.

The south end of the Main Street line, next to the Amtrak station which is to the right of both of these pictures. The Riverfront line comes in here.

Here's a Riverfront car laying over at the Amtrak station, then turning onto Main Street.

Now we head north along Main Street. This is near the Civil Rights Museum (the former Lorraine Motel).

Just south of Peabody Street:

Entering the Main Street Mall at Peabody Street:

At the Peabody Square station:

At the junction of the Main Street and Madison Street lines. A Madison car has just "wyed" on Main and is turning back onto Madison while a southbound Main Street car waits for it.

And now that Madison Street car heads east along Madison. Unfortunately I didn't have time to follow the Madison Street line because it was late in the day. Maybe nest time...

Amazing photos from what seems to have been an amazing trip!. The larger cars look a rather ugly to me...do they only have 1 door for passengers?

Interesting that they run with pantographs, too. Thanks for sharing!

It hasn't even been a few weeks and they closed that sidewalk downtown!!

What is interesting, is that the tracks at the downtown station are the original streetrunning line which used to go through to the other side of downtown just a few short years ago. Somereason they paved over them and put the station right there. And expansion up the street would've been nice and have two downtown stations instead of being on the edge of town.

Secondly, I agree, Kramer is confusing. There is a sign on the platform or nearby that says there IS parking! I think it consists of less than 8 spaces(4 or 6) on the street somewhere! But most or all of the stations have bus connectors for circulars. I don't know if you saw the 3 downtown, but there is one at MLK or Plaza Santillo which has the connector to University of Texas. ALthough UT is downtown IMO.

Lastly, It wouldn't surprise me if that track did run an interurban once. Ever notice that most of the south of US highways running right against railroad tracks, either current or past?

One last batch of pics from Main Street in Memphis...

Here's the northernmost station on Main Street, at Auction Avenue:

North of Auction, the Riverfront Line turns off to the left, to loop southward. The carbarn is a bit further north.

I think that wraps up this trip, finally. I'm not doing anything nearly as ambitious this summer, but my wife and I are planning to drive to New England. We'll probably visit the Mt. Washington cog railway, the Seashore Trolley Museum, and the heritage streetcar in Lowell. Maybe Branford. If we visit a friend of hers on Long Island, I can probably get a day to come into the city. We'll see...
