"It's not trespassing if you're an NYCT employee."

However, I imagine that even an NYCT employee could be disciplined if he were determined not to have legitimate business in the area. A T/O on the 7, for example, would definitely be out of place at 76 St and Pitkin Avenue.

I know we've been down this road a few times before...

Wasn't Pitkin Ave in the vicinity of 76 St torn up during the
late 1960s to install a sewer? Sewers are usually pretty deep.
During the excavation, this empty station shell would have been
exposed, no?

Isn't it logical that on completion of this sewer work, the area
was back-filled with sand?

Last year, I observed a deep hole being dug on Pitkin east of 80th Street for utility lines for a new office building. I asked the project manager if he encountered anything even resembling a tunnel; he said no, just plain soil and they had dug down about 22 feet at that time. Thus one can reasonably assume the projected tunnel never went that far.

However, going east from Euclid to 80th Street, Pitkin is wide (narrowing at 80th Street). On the northeast corner of Pitkin and 80th Street, right next to the cemetery, there is a subway-type grating. Perhaps a tunnel was dug to this point. If one could gain access to what's under that grating.....

I asked a long time resident of the area a few years ago about the 76th Street Station and he wasn't sure but he did remember this. Before the City built the Lincoln Towers hesaid there was talk of puting a subway station over the Pitkin Yards just west of Eldert Lane between Sutter Avenue and Linden Blvd. He claims that the City originally wanted to put a municipal park & ride parking lot near there as well so people could park there cars and take the subway there.

They can run Ground Penetrating radar along the street to see if anything shows up - that would be the only non-invasive way to do it. As for the MTA - they refuse to respond to all requests on the issue. IIRC the station has come up in various news articles - MTA has never confirmed or denied the rumors.

When a government agency neither "confirms nor denies" (ie. CIA involvement in Cambodia, Laos, Nicaragua, etc...) it almost always means the rumor is true!

For what it's worth, there could be more tunnel behind the wall before traces of a station.

Someone from NYCTF posted this up just recently:

NOTE: It's just schematics, but not necessarily concrete proof that the station exists.

It's pretty positive that the tunnel extends beyond that wall, that wall was put there much later. I think most people accept that the tunnel was built further, just how much and if there is a station is what is the controversy.
If there is a long forgotten station anywhere, this is the line it would be. The line was built before World War II from Rockaway Ave to somewhere around here. The full station at Bway Junction was built, and tiled, but it lacked the metal for the rails and signals because of the war effort. The station shells at Liberty, Van Siclen, Shephard and Euclid were also all built before the war, and then construction stopped because of the war. It's not out of the realm of possibility that 76th St's shell was also built when the others were.

Well for one, your average employee is not allowed to just go somewhere in the system and begin knocking through a wall.
Mythbusters would have prior consent and the backing of the MTA if they were ever to do such a thing. It's not like they would just one day walk off the platform at Euclid and start walking there with their cameras.

Makes total sense to me. I'm curious though as to what made the City decide to build an extension over to Grant Avenue rather than just finish what they had already started, since the four tracks that were supposed to continue along Pitkin Avenue dead-end at the bumper block. On the days that SMEEs ran on the (A) I would look out the window and see the tracks that continued under Pitkin Aveue before the train switches to the Grant Avenue lead. It's obvious that they haven't been touched in a long time, as a train that layed-up on the two outer "local" tracks would have to go through a myriad of back and forth moves before being put into service, but the last time I've been on the (A) line was in the summer, but it didn't seem like the two inner "express" tracks saw usage either, as it would be easier to lay up a train on those tracks if necessary because there's a diamond corssover between the express tracks just East of Euclid Avenue.

To add on, Dave on NYCSubway.org even estimated that the tracks end at approximately Elderts Lane. That's four blocks before 76th Street. So yeah there's something behind that wall but from the looks of how long the Fulton Street Line's sattions are, such as Euclid, chances are there'd be a short segment of tunnel before a station shell.

As I specifically said in the original post. But maybe the MTA would like some positive nationwide exposure and give them permission to do it, especially if it would get us foamers off their backs forever.

Ever since 9-11 the Transit Museum (MTA) has gone into super-secrecy mode. They are refusing access to their archives to anyone even members and researchers using the usual "9/11 excuse"

What good is having a museum where the public can't see the collection...

since its on the street you would need traffic cones,at least a 30 foot ladder, vests& a big set of balls.

Do you remember the scene in "GHOSTBUSTERS II" when they dug in the street and found the old pneumatic subway?
