I visited El Reno, Oklahoma yesterday, but alas, the Heritage Express Trolley doesn't run on Memorial Day weekend. The county historical museum that operates it is also closed for the holiday. However, I had better luck in Fort Smith, Arkansas today. Fort Smith Birney #224 was running as usual, and since this is a weekend, the carbarn was open, which was not the case on my previous two visits. Here's #224 waiting for passengers at the Fort Smith History Museum, where you can buy tokens for the ride. There's no regular timetable. Whenever somebody shows up that wants a ride, they go. ![]() A couple of blocks north of the history museum, the line turns to run in the sidewalk of Garrison Avenue, downtown Fort Smith's main drag. ![]() Entering the carbarn at the end of the afternoon: ![]() Interior of #224: ![]() Inside the carbarn, Hot Springs #50 is slowly nearing completion: ![]() And they have started restoring an ex-Veracruz open bench car from the Trolleyville collection: ![]() Next stop: either Little Rock or Memphis, depending on how I decide to deal with the situation that Little Rock's transit system apparently doesn't run at all on Memorial Day (tomorrow). |
