When I arrived in Austin late this afternoon, I decided to head out to the end of the Metro Rail line in Leander before going to my motel. As I approached Leander on US 183, I saw a single track come up alongside the road and run parallel to it. I figured that must be Metro Rail. Sure enough, a bit further on, I saw a train in the distance. Was it coming or going? It turned out, neither! As I got closer, this is the scene I saw:

Note the automobile on the track. What you can't see from this angle is that its left front is bashed in. How did it get on the track? Did the train hit it? I don't know. The train didn't look obviously damaged, at least on the side facing the road.

I went on to the Leander station, about a mile further up the road. Nobody there except for a couple of people apparently waiting to pick up passengers from the train. They didn't know anything. I picked up a map and timetable. As I left the station, the EMS van zoomed by with its lights flashing. Was it carrying someone from the automobile or from the train? I don't know.

I haven't found anything on the local TV station web sites yet. Hopefully there will be something on the 10 PM news.
